Morality and Ethics
« on: September 01, 2016, 11:42:13 pm »
I was scrolling through my Amazon account, as you do, and came across a very good book I bought some years back, Just Love. It's a very good book on sexual ethics, nominally from a Catholic perspective (although not in line with the orthodoxy of Rome).

Are there any good books on philosophy, ethics, and morality from a pagan or polytheistic perspective, outside of the obvious pre-Christian texts?

I think this is one of those areas where different pagan religions will have different views, so you probably need to dig into the ethics for the particular path that interested you most.

For example, I have a book called Living with Honour: A Pagan Ethics by Emma Restall Orr. Although the title says pagan, the author is a Druid and the book is very much coming from a Druidic perspective.

To take one example, the author is critical of pagans who don't recycle since veneration of nature is important to pagans. This is a gross generalisation. Nature is very important to some pagan religions while being less so to others. The Greek and Roman religions spring to mind as having little connection to nature (from my outside perspective - someone more knowledgeable, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Is there a particular religion or area that you're interested in? That would probably help people to give you suggestions that are more relevant for you.

I heard Pagan Consent Culture by Christine Kraemer and Yvonne Aburrow was good. It's definitely cut in line on my to-read list!

The classic for many people I know is Robin Wood's When, Why...If which is not so much a 'what to do' but a workbook on how to think through options and build a solid ethics system.

If you're interested in Wicca, specifically, John Coughlin's Ethics and the Craft: The History, Evolution, and Practice of Wiccan Ethics has a lot of interesting thoughts but is  obviously Wicca specific.

Well, there's Karenga's Maat but it's in formal philosophical/ethical language and Very Very Dense.
