Looking for good books on Artemis or Dionysus
« on: July 25, 2011, 05:28:34 am »
Ok, so I am looking for books on Artemis or Dionysus. There are a few I have found on Amazon and was wondering if anyone has read them, or could give me any idea about whether they might be a good buy.

Dancing In Moonlight: Understanding Artemis Through Celebration
by Thista Minai
http://www.amazon.com/Dancing-Moonlight-Understanding-Artemis-Celebration/dp/0615188184/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IWZXVX4MSWENS&colid=1RE3VP68M0YE6

Unbound: A Devotional Anthology for Artemis
by Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Written In Wine: A Devotional Anthology For Dionysos
by Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Ecstatic: For Dionysos
by H. Jeremiah Lewis

I already have Artemis: Virgin Goddess of the Sun & Moon--A Comprehensive Guide to the Greek Goddess of the Hunt, Her Myths, Powers & Mysteries -
Sorita D'Este

I was also wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good books I can purchase. They can either be books on Artemis or Dionysus wholly or books that arn't necessary about them but might contain good parts or chapters about them (if you know what I mean):o.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance :D:

I have this one and like it because it has essays and poems from followers of her.

A good resource about the myths of her (and also Dionysios) is

http://www.theoi.com/

I agree, I am a big fan of the theoi project. A wealth of information there. ;)

It's an older publication (1910) and more academic than paganish but has some really good info on the sanctuary, the offering and a bit on the cult of Artemis that was excavated at Orthia (Sparta).  Due to its age it is in the public domain so is free and can be down loaded or read on line.

Another on-line book that may be of interest is titled

Gender and Immortality:
Heroines in Ancient Greek Myth and Cult

Chapter 5 has some interesting perspectives of the goddesses and some of the humans associated to them in lore and fable.  It to was downloadable in PDF format if you desired.

Sorry about the multiple posts, trying to find links for each one so i've been entering them as I find the supporting links.

Alkman and the Athenian Arkteia is a JSTOR article that speaks to the Arketia or Bear Maidens at Brauron and other places.  You'll have to have access to JSTOR to get this one or have someone obtain it for you.

Another older publication but has some interesting excerpts and articles on various gods / goddesses.  if you have not discovered the site it has many older public domain items from a variety of subjects.

A gigantic freaking YES! for both of these. :) I've read Written in Wine personally, and I love it. :) I haven't read Ecstatic (which is written by Sannion, btw), but I hope to soon when I have the money to spend on it. From what I've heard it's massive, and contains pretty much everything he's collected and written about on Dionysos.

(I'd also recommend purchasing the books through the Createspace accounts both Neos Alexandria and Sannion have set up, because they get more proceeds from the book than if you bought it through Amazon. You can still leave reviews on the book as far as I am aware of.)

I have a piece in this one, so I'm a bit biased :-P

If you're feeling ambitious, I also recommend Karl Kerenyi's Dionysus: Archetypal Image of Indestructible Life.

You'll probably also find this article to be interesting.

Yes, Amazon does allow you to review books without purchasing them there. I've reviewed a few books there that I would rather eat my keyboard than part with a single penny for....not to mention a book for which I may have been better off eating my keyboard than buying. Oh well, something about not crying over water under the bridge?

Though, that does remind me- stay as far as possible from anything you might find with the name Gregory Zorzos attached to it (As far as I know, you're only really in danger of that at Amazon.)

Thanks for the link it was an interesting read.  I could see how it would apply to Artemis Agrotera for sure and even Hekate in her Artemis-Hekate persona where she is seen functioning in a like manner to Artemis in the wilderness and roads.

Not sure about Artemis Taurapolis or Artemis of Ephesus but still something to consider when looking at those facets of Artemis.

Again thanks for the link a very though provoking read for me.

Thank you for all the links! :) The online books look good.

I've always found it hard to find what I want on Sacred Texts. There's so much on there. It's nice when someone else has found something you can use ;)

JSTOR- I often stumble across articles that look good there, but alas I don't have access.

lol thanks for the advice. I became aware of both of these books from lurking on Neos Alexandria and The House of Vines, which is why I thought they'd be good. I must admit they had me quite excited when I first saw them :ashamed:

Hopefully I'll be able to purchase direct from the sites (I don't know if they deliver to Australia).

Yes, I did! I Read it the night before last. Funnily enough, both Artemis and Dionysus are my patrons, and they do occasionally turn up together and Dionysus often answers my questions about Artemis. Very interesting.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of, which is why I started this thread in the first place.

I'm not sure what the site policy is in regards to JSTOR articles.  I do have the one I mentioned and if its not some sort of violation I can either up load it to this thread of send it to you via email.
