Looking for a Good Atlas of the Ancient World
« on: March 06, 2013, 03:01:39 am »
Can anyone recommend a good atlas of the ancient world?

I'm looking for something that shows the evolution of where various groups of people lived, especially during the Iron and Bronze Ages.  I need it to cover the British Isles, Europe, the Mediterranean, Northern Africa, what we now call the Middle East, and as much of Asia as possible.  Bonus points for other areas.

I realize I might not find what I'm looking for in one book, so multiple recommendations are welcome.

Thanks!

I have a distinct if probably rose-tinted fondness for the Penguin Historical Atlases, which I used to pore through when I was a kid.  (With enthusiasm but not understanding.)  I have no idea if that holds up as an adult, but it's what I think of.

(Hm.  I should ask Dad if he'd be willing to give me those while he's downsizing his library.)

Plausible?  I honestly have very hazy memories of this, I just remember lookinga t maps with little people symbols on them, and arrows indicating population movement flows, and stuff.  SO basically you're getting a recommendation from my inner six-year-old.

Your inner six-year-old is probably a better critic of academic resources than most adults.  ;)

Find some old National Geographics that still have the maps - I have one I got 15? 20? years ago that's a map of the old Celtic World, another of the Roman Empire and some others

Don't cringe, but have you tried looking through Wikipedia? The quality of their academic offerings is improving. I've found a lot of very scholarly stuff on the battle of Gettysburg there, like maps of troop movements and everything, when I was researching for a paranormal investigation this summer.

I've poked around on wikipedia a little.  But my eyes do much better with paper than with screens, unfortunately.

Good to know that source is improving, though.

This is my favourite map for my university study however it's a developing list of major archaeological sites but I found it useful.

This site
http://worldhistorymaps.info/Maps.html has maps available showing the old world here's one from 650BCE http://worldhistorymaps.info/images/East-Hem_650bc.jpg

If Timelines are your thing The Human Past (2nd edition) edited by Chris Scarre provides plenty of information on as many major cultures around the world. This is a favourite book of mine.
