Kemetic- If You could only choose one book
« on: November 11, 2013, 05:20:58 pm »
Okay! I have searched up and down, in and out, of the Special Sig for Kemetic and have seen many of the books being somewhat pricey and I'm wanting a new book so bad it's making me crazy. But with holidays around the corner and a two year old pulling on my wallet I find myself a little strapped with money.

I was wondering- if you could only choose one book for a beginner in Kemetic what would you recommend and why?

Naydler's Temple of the Cosmos.  It addresses the basic cosmological and psychological foundations of Egyptian religion in a very clear and evocative manner.

Have you read Darkhawk's FAQ?  Here is the link if you haven't:  http://www.ecauldron.net/reconegyptfaq.php

As for books, what are you specifically looking for?  Are you looking for academic works or modern spiritual practice works?

I hadn't seen that yet, and will stalk it in just a moment.

I don't really know just yet. I think I want Modern Spiritual at first, then academic works, or maybe the other way around. Honestly, I don't know.. and I hate not knowing  haha.

For modern spiritual practice, I would recommend either Tamara Siuda's Ancient Egyptian Prayerbook or Eternal Egypt by Richard Reidy.

E-Book version:  Ancient Egyptian Prayerbook

E-Book:  Eternal Egypt

I'd third the recommendation for Temple of the Cosmos as well for the reasons Darkhawk stated.

I think these books (aside from Naydler) are only useful if you've got a basic idea of what Kemeticism is, though. Reidy's book is only useful if you're got a basis for performing the rituals. The Prayerbook is only good if you like prayers :P
We are severely lacking in the modern practice book category. You're better off looking at online resources for that, truthfully.

It's not really a first book, but a good read is
Ancient Egyptian Literature, translated by John L. Foster.
It has quite a few hymns, as well as love songs and satires, and it brings one closer to the Egyptians and their thoughts.
Minorities are almost always in the right.
