Can You Help Me Help My Mom? =)
« on: August 30, 2011, 11:13:28 am »
Okay, as I've said before, my mom has come around to Paganism. She's studying up a lot and has asked me to help her find some books. She has Buckland's Big Blue Book, and she likes that. But what she asked for was something less modern. I'll spare you the confusing conversation that led to this, but she doesn't feel comfortable with newer stuff. She leans more towards the Celtic dieties and practices.

I know this is a confusing request, but I'm hoping you guys can help me. I don't know much about Celtic traditions, and therefore I don't know if I'll end up recommending a book that is a doozy. If you can't think of any "non-modern" books or resources, that's quite alright. The Celticness is easier to find. I thank you so much!

Perhaps she would be best off looking at stuff off a Celtic recon booklist?

She could borrow and use information from many Druidry books which heavily rely on the Celtic pantheon. Local libraries will have books about Celtic mythology. If she wants non-modern practices I suggest delving into history books instead of books geared towards the practice of Celtic traditions. The problem with Celtic traditions is that most, if not nearly all, traditions and rituals where of the spoken word and not the written. So, in my opinion, when it comes to Celtic traditions and being non-modern I would look at history books and come to conclusions from references.

I hope this helped.

Perhaps? Is that like a reconstruction or recreation of the Celtic rituals and such? I haven't delved much into Celtic anything. :o

The problem with authentic Celtic anything is that they were religiously opposed to writing anything down, so all people have is scraps that they try to sew together.

But the base idea is an attempt to reconstruct/recreate historical Celtic practices and beliefs, yes.

You should be able to find stuff for her in those lines looking for Celtic recon booklists, and the Hazel and Oak SIG may have specific references folks here recommend.

She might liked 'The Red-Haired Girl from the Bog' by Patricia Monaghan. It's not a how-to book, it's a woman's experiences of Ireland and how they relate to Ireland's past and present. Maybe not just that on its own, but it's definitely a good companion book to more scholarly accounts, and it might be something that she enjoys.
