Books or Websites with Overviews of Different Pagan Paths?
« on: August 19, 2013, 11:06:40 pm »
The pagan literature I own covers primarily Wicca.  Can anyone recommend a book or  a website with overviews of the major paths?

Thank you all in advance.

I don't think there's any one website that lists them all. There's individual websites for Nova Roma, Natib Qadish, Kemetic, CR, Asatru, etc. Outside of Asatru you're not going to find many books. It's mostly do your own research or do it yourself.

Is there any particular religions you are more interested? Or, to be more broad, are you interested in something reconstructionist, or perhaps some of the newer paths?

I thought I already responded to this, but it disappeared.

Not reconstructionist.  Ties to ancient practices are fine, but worshipping the exact same way as the ancients is not for me.

I prefer not to be bound to a particular pantheon, as I believe that the named gods and goddesses are aspects of deity rather than individual spiritual entities.

I am drawn more to religious than to magickal practice.

Wicca is a bit more ritualistic than I would like.

Props can be helpful, but I don't want to feel bound by them.

I want my religious practice to be flexible and natural at any time or place, not just at my altar during the full moon.

I am looking for an efficient way to rule out a majority of paths and select a few for further study.

Apart from my own practice, I would like to have a rudimentary understanding of the major paths so I'm not totally clueless when talking to other pagans.

I would suggest perusing the stuff at http://www.ecauldron.net/newpagan.php and maybe exploring things you find interesting.

You might also find the Teens & Paganism FAQ helpful ( http://www.ecauldron.net/teensandpaganismfaq.php), which discusses a number of different paths and provides links to further resources. It's also listed at the link Darkhawk gave, but I'm mentioning it specifically because it's worth noting that much of the info is useful to people of all ages.  Just disregard the parts that aren't relevant to your age group.

One of the things I've found, is that Seax-Wica or Buckland tradition, is one of the most eclectic paths. Solitary is okay, and even though Saxon god and goddess names are often used, that's optional, because as you stated earlier, some believe all deities are just different aspects of the God and Goddess.

The whole point I'm trying to get at, is worship the way you feel is right. As long as you aren't hurting yourself or others, there's no one who can tell you the "right" or "wrong" way to serve your deities(s).

As for the part about learning about different paths, all I can say is to search online. Official websites are always the best places to start.

Hope it helped!

Depending on the Path, you might want to do reading on more primary sources, like texts from that culture or academic texts about it. Everyone else's suggestions are very good so I don't have much else to add. I also recommend running a search that combines the path you're interested in and the word blog or the names of various blogging platforms if you're looking for personal blogs about it. Of course, take that with a grain of salt.

I hadn't come across the Teen PDF before. I'm not a teen, but much of the overview of information was great for a newb like me. Thanks!
