Books by Sannion?
« on: April 24, 2014, 08:13:13 am »
Hello,

Does anyone has an input or review on books by Sannion (H. Jeremiah Lewis)

Specially this two:
The Balance of the Two Lands: Writings on Greco-Egyptian Polytheism
Echoes of Alexandria: Poems and Stories

I have these two books and I'm wondering if they worth the time :)

Sannion is one of the founders (if not the founder?) of Neos Alexandria, a Greco-Egyptian polytheist group.  Here is the website:  http://www.neosalexandria.org.  They now have many anthologies to different deities coming out through their publishing arm Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

I have not read those two books, but I have read his blog (http://www.thehouseofvines.com) and an essay of his in Waters of Life (one of the BA anthologies).  He's very knowledgeable and knows his stuff.

I've been wanting to get his Balance of the Two Lands for a while now.  It is the only book I know of that deals with the topic of Hellenic and Kemetic syncretism.
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

I haven't read the books, but if I remember correctly, they're collections of posts from his old blog.  If you've already got them I'd say they are worth it.  He may not be an officially trained classicist but I trust him when he's being informative.

Balance is more factual/scholarly, while Echoes is obviously poetically oriented.

Sannion (IMHO) is one of the very few people in the pagan community who is both a brilliant poet and writer and a theologian par excellence; at least where his own Dionysian brand of spirituality is concerned. He's moved away from Greco-Egyptian polytheism as far as I know but his work in that area is definitely worthwhile for anyone with an interest.

“Believing in the Lord means you are connected to me no matter when you are poor, sick, or struggling in a relationship. I am always with you. I want you to believe that. The future is uncertain, and much suffering awaits. However, the mission of the believer is to live life doing their best, no matter what the circumstances.” — Ryuho Okawa
