Bird-sign/augury/ornithomancy resources?
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:00:21 pm »
I've managed to get a general idea of bird-sign since there are so many birds in north California and it would be silly not to learn it. However, my knowledge is still very limited since most of the websites I've found only tell me what the bird itself means.

Occasionally I get specific situations and what it means when they fly south/north or that matter, but the majority of websites limit it to a list of birds + meanings, often in a huge wall of text that makes my eyes glaze over.

Does anybody have books or reputable websites that they'd recommend?

I wish I did. My half-assed approach to augury has been purely intuitional; if I get "that feeling" when I see a bird in flight, I ask myself what it might mean.

The most I can say at this point is that I'm trying to keep myself open to what messages may be out there among our feathered friends. I can't say I understand the messages yet, but I think the first step is learning to distinguish the messages from the mundane bird sightings.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

So I was trawling the web once more with all three of the names entered in google, and I came up with this site.

It has TONS of information and a very long bibliography. Holy crap.

Thanks for the link; it looks promising. I was esp. pleased by the part where s/he said, "What I do suggest you do though, is to take your time to discover, through observation and research, but mostly through your own experiences, just exactly what any given birds natural behaviour is. Then you will recognise the un-natural, the supernatural, the nudges and messages from the Otherworld."

That's where I'm coming from my augury efforts, more or less.

Augury is one of the tools I use for understanding ‘the way things work’.
Until about 6 months ago, I didn’t know it had a name or that it has been used by others for millennia.
Thanks for that link.

Can you explain what you mean by this? I'm curious.

I mean the way things are related and how they interact.
We all can access and control things, first by accessing things ‘on the margin’, like the margin between waking and sleeping, or the margin between being consciousness and being extra- conscious.
Once we get used to experimenting with these things, we can see patterns and then make them happen during our regular daily life.

My conception of augury is more in keeping with other divination methods, whether it's tarot, runes--whatever. We seem to agree that divination is about accessing a level of our mind that isn't normally consciously accessible, but I can't think of how one turns that into control of things, or making things happen.

Maybe I'm not understanding you properly, or maybe we just disagree.

No, I agree.  As I said, it is just one of the tools.
My response was in answer to ‘the way things work’, which is a broader topic.

You know I must be way out in left field for to me augury with birds was always to read the entrails of birds.  The best recorded historical case being when the entrails were read to determine if Pompeii was in danger from the eruption of Vesuvius.

What is being spoken of here to me is omen's and the associations of certain birds to certain omens or forboddings.  Sort of like the omens that were conveyed to Alexander the Great when he encountered a group of birds a few days before he feel ill and died, or the Greek equation of seeing Zeus' hand in things with the seighting of an Eagle prior to some event.

Well, as I understand it, augury as practiced in ancient Rome consisted of using the flight of pigeons, primarily, to determine whether some proposed action was favored by the gods.

I don't have time at the moment for an extensive Google search, but here's what Wikipedia has to say--yes, Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt:

But that would still be in regards to omens and how things will play out.  Not much different I would suppose than say sending a messenger to the local oracle to see what the gods say.  I would say one critical facet being the bird in question would be one that was released by a priest / priestess to see if the omens and portents were to be seen as favorable to the gods / goddesses.

Something a lot different than just watching the migration of a species of bird or reading weather sign by what the birds do.

Entrail-reading is haruspicy, rather than augury.

I'd love to hear more.
Is there an existing topic about 'that'?
