Budge is considered pretty inaccurate now so I would recommend avoiding him.

The book by Elanor Harris I have and it's okay.  I'd say it's a good intro book.

I would steer you toward authors Jeremey Naydler, Richard Reidy, Kerry Wisner, Emily Teeter, and G. Pinch.  That should give you more than enough to keep you busy for a long time.

Most Kemetic books I've seen are pretty bad IMO.  Lots of UPG/New Age fluff/let's put every spiritual thing I can think of and call it Egyptian.  It makes me :hdsk: lots.

I'll second Etheric1 on Budge; his stuff is inaccurate and out-of-date.

I've not read any of the other books.  I recommend picking up a copy of Geraldine Pinch's Magic in Ancient Egypt and Rosalie David's Religion and Magic in Ancient Egypt.  Both are excellent.

As previously stated- Budge isn't worth your time.
Clark's book is very hermetic based. I personally think it's a stack of tripe- but if you're not purely recon, you might be able to make it work for you.

Haven't read the other books. Seen them, not read them. I recommend the books suggested above. If you want a free one, the OI website has Rittner's book there. It's kinda academic, and imo, doesn't give a very wide range of stuff- but it's something.

Technically, Eternal Egypt has heka in it. Execrations, mainly. But still.

Here's my take:

Out of the different Budge books, I didn't like this one at all and this opinion was before I knew Budge wasn't the best source, so in my opinion definitely not a good source.

Rosemary Clark has okay information. Both of her books have many influences that aren't specifically Ancient Egyptian, but if you aren't going for a hard reconstructionist route, there is some information that can be useful. I would just remember that there are outer influences.

"Heka" by David Rankine has a majority of basic information and works best as almost a mini-database, but not as comprehensive as others that are out there. This is a book I go to constantly, especially if I'm blanking on easy information.

"Ancient Egyptian Divination and Magic" by Eleanor Harris is in between in my book. She takes a ton from Budge and uses his information throughout the book (her bibliography is not as diverse as compared to other books I have encountered which leads me to not trust it as much considering the amount of information in the book). It also reeks of New-Agey elements that don't ring true to me (read the back cover of the book, it makes me want to :hdsk: ). She has some okay intro information, but the inconsistencies throughout the book turns me off from it.

I'm not familar with Cox at all, so I don't have any idea. I see that others listed other authors and books. I'm blanking on if I have any to add to that list. If I come up with anything I will probably be posting again.

.........Oh Gods, I forgot about that. Now I'm tempted to go through both of her books and pick all of those out and post each one for rants and discussions in the Kemetic SIG.

IIRC she also swaps the cosmic roles of Set and A/pep.  But that's not funny, that's just eyerollingly bleh.

Sounds like something that would happen. Even if it's not her, so many people make that mistake, I just want to see heads roll for it, or throw books at them to actually read and learn from their lazy ignorance.

I would have to echo not to read most of E. A. Wallis Budge as he appears quite biased. The two I have used are his Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionaries (vol 1 & 2) which are somewhat good considering their age. I have not come across the others in the list.
