If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

By Rev. Dr. Lisa Waltz, ND, DD, CNC

Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows
By: Ann Moura

These are a couple of books, that ive wanted now for a while. I have the availability finally to buy them, but i"d like to make sure they are sound investments! lol. I read through the "beware of these books" thread, and there was one mention of Ann Moura, but not about this book. I would just like to make sure of authenticity if possible! Thank you SO MUCH!!

It'd help to have a better idea what you're looking for - do you want, say, a medicinal book, a magical book, both?

I'm not familiar with this one - but the material she's got on her website (which may be a much briefer version, admittedly) both leaves out some cautions I'd consider important on various herbs on the medical side, and suffers from the same problem Cunningham's does on the magical side, of not being clear where the info's coming from. It's really hard to tell with this one without looking at the book in hand.

Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows
By: Ann Moura

Some people really like Ann Moura's stuff and find that (while her history and approach to some topics are questionable) the actual practices work for them. Not my path, I can't highly comment on that.

That said, depending on what you're looking for, I'm betting there are better sources out there: one of her issues as a writer is that she's not very good at explaining *why* something is done a certain way, so you're basically stuck with doing what she says, or not doing it. There are other authors who, by how they approach a topic, can better open up a range of options for you.

So, again, what are you particularly hoping for from this book?

I'm not a fan of Ann Moura because of her habit of stating her speculative history as fact and because she seems hostile to most religions not her own. However, this book is better than some of her other books such as these books reviewed on our site:  Green Witchcraft or Origins of Modern Witchcraft.

I think this thread might be useful (I asked about this book a few months ago).

I am interested in basically EVERY aspect of green witchery. (MAINLY herbal) What draws me so much to the herbal side, is medicinal. I am still slightly new, and without a "in person" teacher, i'm uneasy about trying anything on the magical side. I am waiting until i can find a mentor, or trainer. So I've chosen to worship, and practice, without trying magic until i can find someone to help train me.

I have EXTREMELY bad stomach problems, since may, from a car accident, that doctors have STILL not been able to help me. Since finding out how many different herbs can help with mind and body, i'm incredibly intrigued. I think this is what mainly pulls me towards Green witchcraft. So any and ALL books on this subject (or even others i may be interested in also) is what I've been trying to collect.

THANK YOU all SOO MUCH!!

In that case, you probably want to look for materials from practicing herbalists.

Two of my own favorites:

The Herbal Home Remedy Book has a great introduction - an overview of some very common and widely useful herbs, but also excellent instructions on different ways to use them (everything from infused oils to salves to herbal vinegars, to syrups and lozenges.

For a detailed look at specific plants, I'd rather go to something really in depth, and bypass the "here's a paragraph on each one" route (I found that really frustrating, honestly.)

I've taken a year of herbalism classes, and my teacher worked extensively with Matthew Wood, who's a widely known US herbalist. He's got an approach to diagnosis and herb choice based on six energetic classifications of imbalance that I've found works really well for me to understand which herbs might help in a given case. His website is at http://www.matthewwoodherbs.com , and he's got essays up about some of the most commonly used herbs in his practice that give you a good sense of his writing style. I invested in his two Materia Medica books (the Earthwise Herbal, books 1 and 2 - book 1 is European herbs, book 2 is North American) and find them very useful for exploring herbs in more depth.

You may also want to check out the various herbalism online forums. Susun Weed, a herbalist in upper New York state, has an extensive forum at http://www.healingwiseforum.com/, and from there you'll find mentions of other herb resources.

Note that different herbalists have different approaches: Susun's a huge believer in long infusions and using one herb at a time. Other herbalists look at creating a blend. There's all sorts of different approaches to figuring out which herbs might work for a given need (everything from the energetics system described above to focusing on nourishing herbs to using various self-testing methods.)
