Long-running script issues
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:29:06 am »
Hello,

I seem to be having an issue with 'long-running script' errors. I'm not sure if some of The Cauldron's coding has changed in the last few weeks, but when I come on the site, and any page afterwards, I have to wait for a script to crash so I can manually stop it in an error pop-up, and then the site finally loads.

The whole process used to take about ten seconds or so per page, but the last week or so, this time has gone up to about a minute loading time per page. Right now, I open The Cauldron, take a toilet break, come back to it, kill the script, open the board I want to read, put on water for tea, come back, kill the script, open the thread I want to read, fold some laundry, come back to it, etc.

As the first thing that loads when I kill the script is the Facebook connect, it might be linked to that.

I'm not sure if anyone is experiencing these issues, but this is literally the only site that is giving me this type of problems and I think I have done everything on my end to fix them (without avail). It's more of a nuisance than a problem at this point, because I only log in to type up long PM's or replies (the rest I do on Tapatalk, which works without a hitch), but I do admit that it is becoming annoying. Yesterday, it caused a blue screen of death, on a CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error. Those I really try to avoid, hence this thread today.

Is there anything I can do to cut down on the loading time and long-running script errors? I'd hate to have to do everything on Tapatalk from now on, as nice as it is.

Thanks in advance!

Did this start when you updated Firefox to the latest version (which may have happened in the background without your knowledge)? You need to check all your firefox extensions for updates, particularly SOCIAL FIXER (or any other extension that is designed for Facebook). You you have a facebook-related extention that does not have an update and are still having this problem after updating all other extensions, you will need tio try disabling that extension. Any page of any web site with Facebook Connect will cause this problem -- it's caused by a change in the way Firefox's Javascript works.

There is nothing any of the web sites you have this problem with can do to fix it (other than remove Facebook Connect type things from their website).

I'm sorry, I should have specified I use the latest IE browser, not Firefox. I also do not use Facebook to log in.

Did it, no change.

Thank you both for your help, though :-)

Exactly what is "the latest IE" for you -- it is different for different versions of Windows. :(

I just loaded both the web site and the forum in IE 10 without any script issues.

While you do not use Facebook, I suspect that it is facebook causing your problem. Because we use Facebook Connect and the Facebook Like button, a bunch of stuff loads from a FB web site every time a page loads. It should cache this stuff in your browser, but if something is preventing it from ever loading, every page would try to find this stuff on FB and wait for it to work. If you were using Firefox or even Chrome, I could tell you have to use ADblock Plus to block these scripts from loading. I have no idea if there is any way to do this in IE 10 -- I know there isn't a version of Ad Block Plus for IE.

I am going to try turning off the Facebook Like feature and let you see if this solves the problem. I can't really turn off Facebook Connect as we have people who use it to log in.

Honestly, if I am the only one with this issue, please don't tinker too much with the website. Others may enjoy the like feature? I appreciate you trying, though!

Just so you know, Elani, I suspect this will help me with some issues I've been having, too. Won't be certain until I've been forum-reading for a while, but I consider it likely.
