list of recent threads
« on: May 29, 2017, 03:47:45 am »
On the old boards there was a list of recent threads that had a new post added. I can't find that list? I can find the 'latest posts' button, but that shows me a (LARGE) preview of the post and shows every post separately, not just the threads. I'd like just a list of the latest thread activity.

Unless I've completely misunderstood what you're searching for: on the top masthead (the bar across the top that follows you down the page) there are two links on the far right-hand side, just before "Logout" and the search bar: Replies and Unread. Replies will take you to a list of threads that you've posted in that have since been updated, and Unread will show you all unread threads since your last visit.

Hope that helps! :)

Perfect! Thank you.  :-*
Now I feel silly for not finding that sooner.  ???

Naw, don't feel silly. SMF can take a bit of getting used to -- even for those of us who were on the first SMF version of the forum. It's taken me forever to remember the masthead at the top at all; the old SMF didn't have that.

Glad I was able to help! :)

I agree - the Unread one gives me alllll the threads on the entire forum which I haven't read all of the posts in (a huge percentage of all the posts), and I'm interested in other new posts other than within threads I've already participated in (the Replies button).  That What's New button was my most used feature of the former site.

If you mark the old threads and boards as "read", it really cuts the "Unread" button down to size.

Thanks, I've worked out how to do that now - still feel it's kind of a shame because I had sooo many unread threads, but hopefully I can always still use a key-word search if I'm hunting for anything specific.

When we made the move, the forum marked every single thread on the forum as unread. Even ones I had participated in and were several years old. Every. single. one.

There is a button at the bottom of the forum that says "Mark All Messages Read." It fixes the problem. Alternatively you can go through each subforum individually, if you want to make sure certain ones remain unread until you're done reading newer posts. The button for "Mark Read" is at the top when you're in a subforum.

While that's likely partly because of the threads being 'ported to new software (I'm guessing vB's and SMF's internal mechanics for saying 'you've read this thread' are different), it's also likely because, while vBulletin automatically marked threads unread after a certain amount of time (I never did figure out if it was one week, or two; I suspect it varied, but don't ask me what the variation depended on), SMF doesn't. Or, SMF 1.1 - what the archive board is on - didn't, and it looks to me like SMF 2.0 doesn't either.

The upside to this (at least, I think they're related) is that on SMF, you can mark a thread unread, if you've looked at it but want to come back to it. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to do that at whatever point in the thread - marking a post unread means in effect marking everything from that point on as unread - so you don't have to mark the whole of a long thread unread (I think - I should do a bit of testing). If there was a way to mark threads unread on vB, I never found out what it was - and I missed that capability the whole six years we were on vB.

No, I seem to be wrong. I don't see how to do it to a particular post (I'm not even sure, now, if that's something SMF 1.1 allowed for, or if I'm thinking of Beehive) or even to a particular page in a long thread. Nevertheless, marking a thread unread is possible, and wasn't on vB.

SMF does that as well, but I have the board set to only do so if someone hasn't logged in in a month. Not doing this would really balloon the database size as it has to track the last message you have seen in every thread you've ever looked at separately. Retaining this info for inactive members is a waste of resources.

Aha, so it was actually 100% for everyone, okay - thank you.
