On my Settings/User CP page, I'm getting little notices that say "Latest Reputation Received" popping up underneath my subscribed threads, with a link to a thread. I searched for info on "Reputation" on the FAQ and saw the explanation... but I think I'm still confused as to how this works, especially since there are various features that can be turned on or off by the host. Which of these features is on, if any? And does it actually provide you with any more information, other than which thread you received feedback for - e.g. what the feedback actually was, good or bad, etc.? Because it doesn't seem like it's making any difference whatsoever to any of the various stats or "achievement" things on my account, either positive or negative... so I'm not sure what the point of it is, or if I should just ignore it. :)

Basically, if someone thinks a post of yours is particularly good, they can give it rep. You get more rep (which shows a green bars on your postbit). After a while, people with a lot of rep will have a lot of little green bars and new people will be able to tell that the TC community as a whole think what these people usually say is worthwhile.

We are leaving it on as an experiment. It works well in some communities and turns into a useless popularity contest in others. SMF had a similar feature, but we never even tried it as the controls over it were not fine-grained enough.

I believe I have negative rep off for all but staff.

FYI, this might not be the case:  When I left a rep point for someone a minute ago, I had the option of clicking on "I approve" or "I disapprove."  I didn't experiment, but it did look like I had the option of giving negative rep.

I think it just quietly ignores requests to give rep (or gives what vBulletin calls "neutral" rep) from those not authorized to actually give it.  I'm not sure, however. Rep is one of the harder things to understand on vBulletin. :(

Did you disable it for yourself, too? Because your bar is greyed out, and the hovertext says you've disabled it. (Just curious.)
