That's what I'm talking about; the R&P category. And I'm seeing it on Tapatalk; I'm on the road now and spending very little time on the browser. Log in to Tapatalk and I think you'll see what I mean.

We don't really support Tapatalk. If it works great, but we aren't changing the board to make it do so. Tapatalk really wants a standard SMF board with very few mods (preferably 0).

That said, I don't see anything we could change that would make it not show a description for a Category when SMF does not even have a Category Description field.  We have no description set for "Religion and Philosophy" as it is a category and there is no way to set a Category description in SMF, so Tapatalk is apparently selecting some "random" text from elsewhere on the board to display.

If you notice a major issue with the new SMF board software, please post about it here.

Is it by design that I can only reply to threads by quoting another post?  There is no separate "reply" button.  Occasionally I do have some thoughts on the general idea of a thread, but nothing particularly stands out as being a phrase that makes sense to quote and directly respond to.

That is entirely by design - quoting is one of the board rules. If you're just replying to the general topic of the thread, just quote a sentence or two of the first post. (Or you can even just delete the text and just leave the two bits of quoting code that are in the square brackets. You may need to have them on two separate lines: I don't think we've tested that thoroughly in this version of the board software yet)

It's different from how a lot of other forums do it, but it's one of the things that makes discussion work better here.

More over here in the actual rules post about quoting.

It's not a major issue, but it's a little bit of a shame - I find the new forum harder to read than the old.  Harder for me to distinguish each individual post from the previous/from the bit it's quoting.  Almost makes me wish that the hard rule of quoting had been revised with the transition.

The quoting rule is one of the hard and fast rules around here, and has been for ages. (If you go back through the periodic 'are there changes we should consider' threads, you'll see Randall usually specifically mentions that that one is not up for change.)

Randall, is there a possibility of additional user themes, once the other more necessary stuff from the move is sorted? I know they sometimes can break things with the various mods in place, but I agree with Pickle that the default theme formatting can sometimes be hard to distinguish quickly.

(The other thing people can do, of course, is be attentive to only quoting as much as they need, which often makes the content clearer.)

One thing you could try is increasing the font size in your browser by a notch or two. That really improved the new board's readability for me (not least because there are fewer words per line of text that way).

Unfortunately not. The way SMF works, I would have to start the board from scratch to add a different theme as all the mods would have to be removed and reinstalled -- and most are only designed to work with the standard theme). And no one seems to create CSS only themes for SMF -- which would avoid this problem -- as they did for vBulletin.

If you notice a major issue with the new SMF board software, please post about it here. Please be as specific as you can including links to posts/etc, if needed.

Not an issue--more an observation. Right after the migration, I started getting thread notifications by email again (from the last time we were on SMF). Threw me for a little while, wondering why I suddenly started getting them after so long.

Happened for me too and I found that I'd been marked as "notify" for all the posts I'd ever posted in since we moved to VB.

If you don't want this, a quick fix is to turn off emails for notifications, but if you do later want to notify a post it's not a permanent solution. I ended up going through all the pages of the posts I was set to be notified for and turning them off, so that in the future if I do need email notification of a post, I can actually get that.

(In general there's no point for me to be notified via email; I check the board more often than I check my email.)

You can reach the list of the boards or topics you're notified for and email settings by hovering over your profile picture in the top right hand corner, selecting "Modify Profile" and selecting "Notifications" under that menu.

That's unexpected. I'm surprised vBulletin preserved the old SMF board settings on those old threads. I had notifications turned off on the old SMF board (as I always do) so nothing like that happened for me.

Yes, THIS. The SMF typeface is defiitely smaller than vB's, and my eyes are not pleased. Can something be done about this on TC's end, Randall, or should I, and others with similar issues, just follow Sefiru's lead and adjust it in our browsers?

There's no obvious way to adjust it on the board. I'll look at the SMF Support Forum and see what I can come up with, however. However, adjusting it in your browser will work now.

I have made the font larger. Note that you may need to clear your browser cache to see it. Try hold down shift and clicking the reload button while viewing the forum. This should work on Modern versions of Chrome and Firefox o Windows and Linux (and perhaps others).
