Odd log-in glitch
« on: July 03, 2011, 12:32:11 am »
(Possibly related to the iPod/iPad one, as it's doing something similar).

I rebooted my computer today, and discovered an interesting glitch

- I come to the main index page. I'm logged out, as I expect to be after needing to restart my browser and computer.

- I log in. It looks like the log in process works normally (got the little "Thank you, Jenett, we're taking you to the forum page now." message).

- But what I get is the non-logged-in index page. (I'm using a different skin, so this is sort of obvious.)

- If I click onto another page (forum folder index, for example), then I get the logged in version, and then after that, everything's fine.)

I did just try clearing my cache, which didn't solve the problem. It's late enough here I'm not going to try more troubleshooting tonight, but I'll poke at it in the morning. In the meantime, if you're having problems like this, try clicking onto a different page on the forum and then back to the main index, and see what happens.

[Mac PowerBook running 10.6.7 running Firefox 3.5.3, which is the latest Mac version.]

Which skin are you using?

Perhaps it is the email address login mod. However, as I don't have a Mac, I can't test this.

The latest version of Firefox for the Mac OS is version 5.0 -- at least according to the Firefox web site. The 3.5.3 version is way out of date, it was released September 9th, 2009. Firefox's current policy is to only support the latest two versions of the browser, in this case 4.01 and 5. Even 3.6.x which was the version in use at the first of this year is no longer supported. :(

Huh. I doublechecked it before I posted, and the auto-note thing on the Firefox site said "You have the latest version" (though, now I look at the front page, I'm getting something different!)

I'll update this morning and see what happens. (Generally, it's picked up auto updates reliably, so who knows what happened.)

Midnight blue

I don't think that should be a problem as the "midnight blue" skin is (supposedly) just a CSS variant on the default skin. The lightweight skin is much different (and does not even have all the board features).  I guess I will just disable the mod that allows members to log in with their email address -- as far as I know that is the only mod that modifies the login. It uses javascript which is the one thing that varies a lot from browser to browser and OS to OS.

I noticed that the Firefox autoupdate gets strange and not as accurate as it should be across "major" versions. I seldom get notified when a "major" version change happens: 3.5.x to 3.6, 3.6.x to 4.0, 4.01 to 5.0 -- I don't believe I ever got a notification from the Firefox autoupdate system on my (Win7) machine for any of these. :(

That makes sense - and I know it can be especially problematic on mobile devices.

Definitely. I'm upgraded to 5.0 now, and so far so good - I'll let you know if I see any other problems.

I'm having the same problem. I'm on Chrome (according to it, it's updated... 12.something.something else... I can't remember the numbers, but I can copy them if you need them), in Windows 7.

I've disabled (actually completely uninstalled) the only mod that affects logins, so I really have no idea what is going on. Unless it happens to me, there's no way I can even begin to debug it. :(

What style are you using?

Sigh. That rules out style issues.

Do you have "Remember me" checked?  If you aren't on a public computer, this should keep you logged in for relatively long times -- which might prevent this problem from showing up often for you.

Yes, I checked it the first time I logged in, and then, when I didn't seem to be logged in, I tried to log in again and checked the "remember me" box again. :/

In any case, it's not a big deal. I know now that if I seem to be logged out when I'm supossed to be logged in, all I need to do is enter one of the forums. (If I'm still logged out after that, then it'll be a problem...)

All I can say is that's truly weird.
