New Replies Warning.
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:20:25 pm »
Three times I've gone to reply to something on one of the groups I'm a part of and I've received the "warning--there are new replies..." message. However, after I re-click post message, there is no new reply.

I haven't seen this. I'll watch for it (as until I see the issue I can't begin to figure out what is going on).

I've had the opposite problem.  I've written a reply, posted it, and realized that there were several new posts between the one I replied to and my reply.

That isn't unusual - I open all the new threads in tabs so I don't lose my place when i have to wander off for one reason or another.  A lot of the time the last post in an open thread is not really the last post in the thread (I do try to read to the end before I post, just so I don't duplicate someone else's answer)

On smf this wasn't a problem because it would tell me there had been new posts and I could read them right there.  I would then decide whether to discard my post or to go ahead and post it.  I know reading to the end isn't required, but I used to do it on Beehive too, just opening the reply box in a new tab and continuing to read.  It's a personal preference, so it tends to bother me when I hit post and then have to go back and read the posts I didn't realize existed.

So is the 'warn of new posts' function broken, giving some people false warnings and some no warnings at all, or is it different for social groups as opposed to threads?  Or should I just start hitting refresh before starting my reply?  It's all good - I just want to stop being confused. :)

It seems to work  sometimes, I've  just  been reloading the  tabs  if I've  had them open  for a while just in case  there are  new  posts. It  seems like there is a glitch in the code or  something  that it's not  catching all the new  posts.

Here's the description of the mod:

Quote
This mod checks for any new replies when posting to a forum or group  discussion. If there are new posts since the last time the user has  viewed the thread, the user is redirected to the preview page and a  warning message is displayed.  The mod also adds a "Topic Review" section to the bottom of the Full  Editor/Preview (Go Advanced) page for group discussions similar to the  one for forum threads, and marks the new posts with a red "New" message.

I think it is supposed to work in forum or social group messages. However, I can't tell from this description if it works the same way in each.  Unlike SMF, this feature is not built-in. Given that there have only been 20 downloads and 7 installs of this mod (as of when I wrote this message), it doesn't seem to be something many vBulletin users see a need for. :(

Here's the description of the mod:

I've missed a few myself - from what I can see, they're posts that have been made after I got to the last page in the thread, but before I hit "reply".  It hasn't come up enough that I have a solid baseline of data from which to be certain this is what's happening; it's just the impression I've been getting - but if it's so, the mod doesn't function quite like it claims (almost, but not quite).

Sussing it out is complicated by me, like Marilyn, having a strong preference for reading all posts before making replies - so in a busy thread, I'll be going back a page or several to the posts I want to reply to.

So far I've found that scrolling down the "reply to post" screen and checking that the last post it lists is one I've read (and if not, reading new ones right there - much easier on VB than on SMF, since on VB their appearance is more like how they look in thread) works, though remembering to do it isn't yet a habit.  Reloading the page should also work.

I've just gotten this error again. Strangely, though, there couldn't be any new posts- I was starting a new thread.

humm was that the only  mod for  this? Do you know if there were other  ones?  Sometimes   it  all depends on  who wrote the   code for the mod  and  if they  don`t come back and  check their threads for  problems and fix them  then the  mod  is  pretty  much useless.

It's the only 4.x mod I found for it. Like I say, there doesn't seem to be a lot of call for it. It seems to work well (for me, at least) in the main board. Social groups, not as well.

That's because it is apparently "feature" to the vBulletin designers, not a problem to be solved. :(

That's ok. It's not the end of the world. Sometimes a post will just be out of place. :)  It was driving me nuts until I found this thread.......I thought I was doing something wrong and couldn't figure out what it was.
