Author Topic: Can't give reputation to someone more than once? (Read 2211 times)

I'm noticing that if I've given rep to someone, despite having given rep to at least 10 other people (I am estimating here, since I can't look at a list AFAIK of rep I have given to other users), I can't give rep to them again? I keep getting the message that I have to spread rep around to other users before trying to give it to them.

I'm only mentioning this now because I know of about three users I gave rep to initially on the new forum I still can't give any to again, despite having given rep out to a lot of other users. (But well... like I said, I'm estimating. My "a lot" may not be the board's "a lot".)

Of course, if we aren't supposed to give someone rep more than once, then feel free to ignore this.

Another board I'm on also uses V-Bulletin and you do have to "spread the wealth" a bit before you can Rep someone you've already Repped

I think that's the way vBulletin is designed -- I guess to prevent reputation from becoming a popularity contest.

Since I can't see that it'd do very much to prevent popularity contests from happening, my guess is that it assumes popularity contests are inevitable, and is intended to prevent ballot-box stuffing.

(This also assumes that users of the system will have a junior high school mentality about how they use it. I'd feel insulted, but I'm too well acquainted with the wider Web.)

I honestly assumed that after giving rep to about 15 or so people, or even 20, it would allow one to give rep again to the first people. Giving it just once seems... weird? But then again, I have no idea if that's even changeable on the board software, or something people *want* to change. More or less I was wondering if this was intention in the board software or it was just a bug on my end.

I don't really bother with rep here on TC as it isn't a big part of the culture. One of the other boards I frequent pays a lot more attention to it so I looked up how the system works. Assuming all vBulletin boards have the same settings in this regard, you have to give reputation to 40 other people before you can give it to someone that you've already repped. I find this rather excessive... But hey, what can you do.

Some of it could be on your end (or in the way your browser interacts with VB, or something like that), since, while I've had it tell me to spread it around once or twice, I don't seem to be having anywhere near as much trouble with it as you are. Could be frequency of use, though - a post has to really impress me before I remember that there's such a thing as giving rep, so I'm only doing it once every week or so. Might be that it's not how many people you've given rep to since you last gave it to Person X, but how many days since you gave rep to Person X.

:eek: 40?!? I'm quite sure that's not the quota I have to meet - I'm not even sure we have 40 people who post both frequently enough and well enough for me to "spread it around" sufficiently.

Er, it may work differently for staff, so I should probably stop talking as if my experiences with it are a good example.

I'll look into it tomorrow, real life permitting. However, considering Rep isn't very important here -- I had forgotten we even had it turned on -- I'm not probably not going to spend much time on it. If it is easily adjustable, I'll see what i can do.
