I did a forum search and checked the FAQ and didn't get any bites.

I see different avatar sizes on the board. Are these based upon post amount and/or supporter status or is it only for mods and admin?

Here are the avatar guidelines as outlined in the rules:

Users who do not wish to see member avatars may disable them in their User Settings.

All members may select any avatar available on our server (even if it does not met the size requirements for uploaded avatars listed below). Over 1200 avatars are currently available in our collection.

Many member groups are allowed to upload an avatar (or use an avatar on the web). For most usergroups, such avatars may be no larger than 128 pixels wide and 200 pixels high and must be 10k or under in file size. Certain usergroups (donors, for example) are allowed avatars with slightly larger file sizes. Animated avatars are not allowed. These limits are normally enforced by the the system.

Members who do not select or upload an avatar will have the Gravatar associated with their email address (if any) used. If they have no Gravatar, a face-like avatar will be generated (from a hash of their email address so the generated avatar should be unique on this message board) and used. Unfortunately, these automatic avatars do not show up in all areas of the forum. If you want to use them, it is best to download the image and upload it as a standard avatar (which will be used everywhere).

I think the same size applies to everyone at the moment. But yes, it could vary for any of the reasons you list. However, the actual height and width is unlikely be any larger for anyone as avatars aren't supposed to dominate posts. File size (in bytes) is probably a bit larger for donors -- but not much as no one wants to have to waste bandwidth to download someone's 50K avatar.
