"New replies" bug?
« on: December 31, 2017, 09:12:03 am »
Has anyone else noticed the "New replies" popups ( the ones that show up as translucent bubbles over the screen when you first login) have gone completely crazy?   They quit working properly a couple of months ago but seem to be getting worse.    Basically all the things it is calling new replies haven't been new for many months, and I have made a point of clicking on the threads so they are already marked as read.   Now there are just so many they cover the screen and freeze the forum for several seconds every time I come here.

They show up on some visits. Sometimes with new replies, sometimes with older replies, but so far I can't remember any that are foir replies I've already seen.

That said, it's not terribly useful to me, but as no one else has said anything, I guess they may be useful to others. They can be turned off if most active members would like.  Or at least most members replying here in the next few days. :)

They seldom tell me anything I don't either already know, or would find out soon enough anyway. I wouldn't miss them if they were turned off. (I only get them occasionally, though - it's very random, and there's lots of times it didn't show me any even though there were replies - so they're not interfering with my foruming the way they are with Ashmire's.)

I personally would like them turned off as well (or at least a personalized option for individual users to turn them off). It takes up a whole page and takes a second to go away.

Same. I assume maybe it's something to do with I read stuff on Tapatalk so maybe it's just not registering they're read? It's not a big deal but it doesn't do me a lick of good either.

I don't really use them, as I always click the "unread" option, or the "replies" option and I look at all of the new posts at one time.  I don't really dislike them, either, as they aren't causing any inconvenience like OP, but I'm not attached to them and wouldn't be sad if they were removed.

Same here, more or less - I hadn't had any real issues with them, found them useful on one or two occasions (having said that, on reflection I'm sure there was a period when I wasn't getting them and I didn't miss them...)

I haven't had problems with them, but I don't use them (I go to the Unread posts page, and open things from there) so I wouldn't mind if they went away at all, Randall.

Same here. There is often so many that I can't click on them before they vanish off the page. They tend to freeze my screen and then disappear before I can even read them properly. A bit annoying so I wouldn't mind if they could be removed also.

If I'm parsing the gist of the thread correctly, what's maybe mildly useful to a mild annoyance on a computer-computer is apparently cripplingly annoying to phone/tablet users, so it can probably go, boss.

I've turned them off for new replies, but have left them on for new personal messages. We'll try it this way for a while.

That explains why I didn't see the new replies. Thanks for removing that pesky feature!

No one had said anything about them since we moved to the new board, so I had no idea they were causing some folks issues. I failed Mind Reading 101, you see.  ;) ::) :P
