I wonder if this is old news to some of you, but I found an interesting transcript of an interview with the allsherjargoði of the Ásatrúarfélagið in Iceland:

Part One
Part Two
Part Three

He has some very interesting things to say about Asatru in America vs. Asatru in Iceland (it's in part two, if anyone just wants to skip to it). It's quite interesting to me, as a student of religious studies, to note the differences between how it's practiced in North America and how it's practiced in Iceland.

I found his comparisons to be interesting as well.

Thanks for posting this, Lokabrenna! :)

The Asatru I knew best (we're out of touch now, alas, after some turmoil in her life) was from Iceland, and that and this article do clarify some of the reasons that her religious practice is so different from a lot of things I've seen people discussing.

I think part of the reason is that Asatru in Iceland is associated with the political left, whereas in North America the opposite is true, generally speaking. There are exceptions to every rule, of course.

I still haven't had a chance to listen, but I very much would like to. We know there are many differences between us and the Icelanders, so much so that many people here refer to us as the Vinland Asatruar in order to differentiate us from each other. And there are regional differences in the US as well, just as there should be in my opinion. The things that I found regionally significant to me as a resident of New Mexico do not have nearly the same importance now that I am in Indiana, and vice versa.
