I was connecting with Thor today and my experience was nothing like the movies - it never is.

And yet, there are parts of my subconscious that cling to these Hollywood representations.

They're bad ass representations, don't get me wrong, but at some level I feel they distort my connection with our Gods.

Have you had a similar experience?

I think the problem with gods in media (any media, not just Hollywood) is that the gods are often transformed into characters, rather than a force from without. Obviously, this is not a new problem, as in mythology gods are often also characters. However, modern forms have the added problem of being divorced from the source culture, and the need to satisfy sales expectations. This causes two problems. First it is easy for them to become distorted. The point of legends is lost, and the personality of the divinities altered fundamentally. Second, it portrays the gods as discreet beings, which may not be appropriate for certain religions. I'm not a Heathen, so I'm not sure if it is different for others, but I suspect that the 'gods' from many traditions are more than just dudes with superpowers. There is a conceptual element to some divine figures that cannot easily be captured in in media, at least by the uninitiated.

Oh definitely!  The problem is that Hollywood presents this idea of a God in such a way that it sticks to the mind.  When you think of Thor, it's hard not not to think of Chris Hemsworth with a red cape.  It's just like the Western representation of Jesus.  People have this idea of the white male with long hair...
For he who has truly lived never truly dies.

I've not experienced this so much probably because I do not really watch TV and movies much. Though I have seen the Avengers movies and such, I've not really had the problem of conflicting experiences with connections. This may be because I identify more with Them and Their world than this one, or because I never really get that far into the movie experience to allow that representation to take hold.
