Anyone experience dreams involving the Aesir-Vanir?
« on: November 13, 2011, 02:33:37 am »
There is a dream I had a while ago, just after I fully embraced my Heathenism after being drawn to it for years but shying away to other systems of religion. Anyway in this dream I was in a very large grassy field and I saw warriors with armor shields and swords coming towards me. It was maybe about 200 men. I started to fight them with this sword I was holding. I did not look behind me, but somehow I saw a very tall gray bearded man in the distance behind me. He made a sign with his hand, the same kind of hand sign you see Christ doing in Christ pictures like a blessing sign. A red rune shot out of his hand and went into the blade of the sword and the blade became about three times as long and after that with each swing of the sword I was cutting about 15 men at a time in half without any real effort. Of course afterwards I knew the tall man most have been Odin. I don't want to sound sadistic or anything, but the feeling of being there and fighting was very euphoric.

Wow, sounds pretty cool.  Not to mention it sounds like a scene from a Norse/Germanic version of God of War.  Are you particularly drawn to Odin more than others in the pantheon?

Actually I would say I feel a strong connection to Odin, Thor and Freya and after that I have a lesser feeling of connection to Tyr. I pray to Freya the most though.

Wow, that's incredible! Do you remember which rune it was that came out of Xist's hand? Runes that are given to us in dreams have great power and from the sounds of it, yours will have the power to remove obstacles from your path, if you remember it.

For myself, I've had dreams about Odin and Fenrir for years. In all these dreams, Odin and Fenrir aren't enemies and they travel together often. In one dream, Odin and Fenrir are going up a mountain on a quest for some water with magickal powers when a storm hits, they shelter together and the warmth from Fenrir's pelt keeps Odin warm. Which makes sense to me because wolves always take care of their packmates.

And it can't be unseen D:

I had a dream a couple days ago. I was at this big event like PantheaCon, and there was a wagon with an effigy of Thor being pulled around by goats, and there were people (in white) helping it along. As it was making a circuit of the place, people were shouting "Hail!" and such, but when it went by me, all I could do was wave as it went by (one of the men accompanying it smiled and waved back).

So the wagon goes by and then Thor himself comes over (huge guy, red beard and hair, giant hammer) and he says: "Why didn't you say anything when I went by?" and I was like: "I was nervous." Then he laughs, and he says: "Girl, you don't have to be nervous around me." I said: "Okay", and then he asked me where he could find the beer tent. ("Aren't you Pagans supposed to be fun?")

Then I guess it skipped a few scenes, because next thing I knew I was trying to make an offering to Isis (Aset, technically, because I think it was a Kemetic space in the festival), and a lady was like: "You're not doing it right! Here, give this to her, but make sure you give it to her properly!" and she tossed me a stone wheel (it had eight spokes). I decided to take the wheel for myself rather than give it to the goddess.

I honestly have no idea what provoked the dream. I don't really have "god dreams" and Thor would honestly be the last deity I'd expect to see in my dreams. I'm not even going to touch the scene with Isis, I have no idea where that came from. Even when I was into goddess worship, I never really cared much when authors would gush about how super awesome Isis was.

You might find the following link interesting:

Origins of German Carneval

Scroll down the page to Section III: Ship Processions.

It discusses the wagons/carts/ships of the gods, the processions, and also addresses the goddess that Tacitus calls Isis.

That's ok, not everyone is in touch with their minni to such an extent that they can truly understand or appreciate these concepts. I wish you luck in the future, brother/sister of the Frith!

Well thank you! But it's not that I am not in touch with my "minni". It's more like I am in touch with my history. :p

... the Japanese as reiki, the Romans referred to it as Rhea Kybele, which means "the rolling astral light.

Whut?

Reiki is a modern Japanese movement created by a self professed healer. Reiki isn't an ancient concept to my knowledge.

Kybele is the Greek name for a Phrygian goddess who was identified and conflated with Rhea, the mother of Zeus and his siblings - while the Romans called her Magna Mater.

I think such concepts can be interesting. But when they're mixed with bad information and misrepresentation that's passed off as fact, I tend to stick with the less 'mystical' interpretation.

Minne? As in the drink/toast?

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely set against a concept of a Germanic 'manna', even if there isn't really any evidence for it, since I've been kicking an idea around my head of whether or not Odin was initially a spiritual force within all gods and not the 'Father God'. And I do like reading different takes on the mythology. But they have to be based in something tangible for me, and not on a science fiction book. I mean, vrily now. [Terrible pun]
