I just saw this on i09 and I thought it was interesting enough to share- I really like some of these rules/ideas.

On Twitter, Pixar storyboard artist Emma Coats has compiled nuggets of narrative wisdom she's received working for the animation studio over the years. It's some sage stuff, although there's nothing here about defending yourself from your childhood toys when they inevitably come to life with murder in their hearts. A truly glaring omission.

If tv writers followed that tip more often... many tvshows wouuld go downhill so fast after the first season, I am just saying.:p

#20: Exercise: take the building blocks of a movie you dislike. How d'you rearrange them into what you DO like?

This is something I do often and not only with movies, but books, comics ... everything that leaves a sour o bittersweet taste in my mouth. And with a story I really like instead, I do start wondering how I might turn its plot in a supernatural/fantasy one while changing it all I can.

It gives me so many plot-bunnies!

#7: Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get yours working up front.

*nod*

I realized that if when I start a story I don't know how its final chapter will transform the main characters, the story wanders idly and dies unfinished. I need being clear on how starts and how it ends or nothings gets done, even if the ending changed completely in my head once I got to half of the story.

#9: When you're stuck, make a list of what WOULDN'T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up.

This one, I'll really need to keep at mind.

#13: Give your characters opinions. Passive/malleable might seem likable to you as you write, but it's poison to the audience.

Ohh.. I need that one.. My side characters are getting to be more interesting than the main character - she needs to get so more opinionated and defined...
