No, I never got a tattoo until I was in my 30ish years. However had I gotten some of the ones I wanted when I was younger I sure would regret them!

Same here - my first was at 34, so I'd had a lot of time to think about what I wanted

So, here's a new question (of course, the showing off is always in play). Does anyone have any tattoos that they got at a younger age, that you look at now and think "what was going through my head?"

Yes. I have one tattoo, and I hate it. I hate it so much, that I won't even tell you what it is. It reminds me of the worst years of my life. Luckily, it's on my back so I don't have to see it all the time. Eventually, I plan to have it covered up.

I try to tell myself that it should serve as a reminder of a difficult time in my life that I eventually overcame, experiences that made me stronger, blah, blah, blah. But no... It just sucks.

The fact that you're really honest makes me smile. :P
I got my first at 18, and one or two each year until I turned 24... And I'm not 24 anymore so hey, it's been awhile since my last.

I got my first when I was seventeen. I was studying Japanese because both of my parents had taught English outside of Tokyo in the 70s, and I thought I wanted to do the same. Also: it was the 90s. And I was a nerd. So I totally got kanji. I don't regret it, exactly - I at least wrote the character myself and didn't pick it out of a flash book - but the artist was definitely not awesome; it's still legible but the lines are fuzzy and thick. If I could go back in time I'd teach young!me that you should save up and find a good artist, not go to the first one you can afford.

It is one of those quintessential stupid teenager tattoos, but I got off lucky. I have a friend who has the worst tattoos. Just awful. He has some large kanji, a tribal armband, and a huge half-done picture of Wolverine on his back. He regrets every single one, and I cannot blame him. I should nominate him for that Tattoo Nightmares show.

Yikes... define "half done." o.0

I'm kind of curious as to what the before and after thoughts are. Personally, I don't regret any of my tattoos as they're symbolic, but I do wish that I could go back and find better artists for a few of the earlier ones... You know, thinner needles, better design, better shading, etc...

If I had the money, I'd start working on having the one on my right ankle removed TODAY. I got it just before I moved to St. Croix, and it's the geographic coordinates of the island. I got it because it was more subtle than getting the guy's name, and now that he's (thank gods) out of my life, I hate it only marginally less than if it *had* been the name. Plus, his name is short, so there would have been less to remove.

For fellow tattoo enthusiasts, a place to share the artwork on our skin canvas and to ask/answer questions pertaining to tattoos for those who are interested. :)

Work very much in progress, after first session:

Here is my work-in-progress.  It's been about a year, and five 3-4hour sessions.  One more session, and she will be done!

I have many others. Some that are noteworthy: Wesley Willis, a fetus smoking crack and wearing a ten gallon hat, a molotov cocktail with recycle arrows around it. I only regret one tattoo and that's only because it took up my entire back. I don't mind the tattoo otherwise.

EDIT: I can't figure out how attachments work so I'm posting links. Hope this is okay.

That is gorgeous!

Here are mine, in chronological order:

And I know my Spanish is bad in that last one. :ashamed: Totally my fault - the artist was awesome.

Here's my second and latest:

It sits just to the left of my collarbone, above my heart. It was originally a symbol of overcoming difficult situations (peacocks are able to eat poisonous snakes without harm), but then I read somewhere (after I'd already gotten it) a Quan Yin creation story in which She gives the peacock a hundred brilliant eyes to watch over all who are devoted to Her.

And the quill writing out "love" is my homage to To Write Love on Her Arms, anti-suicide movement.

Ah I get to see all the tattoo-ness. ^^ Love 'em. Plus I love the fact there are a lot of artistic people on this forum. :)
