One bright day
Not so long ago

America’s soul bled
Her tears poured forth
Like rain

Shed by each of us
In pain
Fear
Anger

Heartache

The horror unfolding
While we watched

America attacked

Buildings collapsed
Lives destroyed
Families shattered
Some at work
Some on board

Those fated planes

Sisters, brothers
Mothers, fathers
Aunts, uncles
Grandparents, friends
Coworkers

All
Someone’s child

Other children
Born that day
And after

Never to know
Their loved ones
Except in pictures

Cherished pictures
Beloved memories

So many things
Changed

In one heartbeat

America’s voice
Became muffled
Was muted
In shock

With pain

Then suddenly
A tiny spark
One single voice
“Let’s roll!”

America found hope
Once again
And Her voice

It rang out loud
It rang out proud
It still rings out
“From sea to shining sea”:
