I live a long way from Mexico, but Dia de los Muertos is a big deal hereabouts (at least in urban centers).  And not just among the Mexican American community.  I think it's pretty safe to assume that urban areas are going to be more receptive to Dia de los Muertos imagery, with at least some more rural settings possibly less so.

I live about 2 hours from where NibbleKat lives, and it's a pretty big deal here, too, because there's a huge Mexican-American segment of the population.

I imagine the closer you are to Mexico, the better they will go over in general. I suspect they'd sell fairly well at Pagan Pride events in South Texas, for example.

I think they miiiight do well here in NC, because we have a huge immigrant population, so the culture's getting much more well-rounded in terms of people's awareness of stuff like Day of the Dead. I'm not sure, though.

I sort of though the same, the closer to Mexico the better they'd be received.  Move away from there and I can see it either being seen as a HooDoo / VoooDoo type scenario (think New Orleans and such) or more Satanic (especially in parts of the bible belt).  In some area's I could even see it as more counter-culture such as Bike Clubs or your Gothic influences.

Personaly I wouldn't buy them as skulls are not representative of my beliefs or practices.  Yet my son would buy them simply because they are skulls and he collects that sort of thing.

Yeah, I REALLY wanted to paint some Orishas, but I can't see those selling as well here, since we're so much further North than where that's an influence... I think that the bit you said about just collecting skulls might be the kicker. But they're fun to paint, so... maybe...

They sell these at my local craft store around Halloween.

Everyone in my pagan homeschool group loved Dia de los Muertos (sugar skull decorating was the highlight of the party for the kids).

Thanks for the input...

..and again, dangit, they're so expensive. *flusterflaps*

I'd say the thing there is that The Day of The Dead celebration occurs on Nov 1 so is close enough that most associate it to Halloween.  For many a time of parties and such.  It is in all probability as commercialized as Christmas is and is more of a party time than an actual observance of a spiritual practice.

Yet Pagan Pride in most area's I've seen falls in Sept time frame and is associated to Pagan practices and pride in such.  It is not associated to Halloween or the candy and parties that that name inspires in the minds of most people.

Granted there are enough "Halloween" costumes to make many of them look like some sort of REN fair or worse.  Even to the extent of who is more witchier than another in apperance which I personaly think makes them a joke vice something that paints the pagan community in a positive light to the non-pagan.

Yeah, I think I'll be hitting up a lot of the folks who are buying for Samhain...
