The Temperance card is an Angel, supposedly Michael, the Archangel, standing on the shore of a small body of water, pouring water (spirit) from one large golden chalice into another. It is said to represent Soul pouring spirit-energy into the body, giving it life. He wears a white robe, signifying purity. There is a mystical symbol on his breast, a triangle, signifying spirit, within a square, which symbolizes the “four-square” material world. Once more, Spirit within the body. His left foot is in the water and the right, on the shore , a balance between the spirit world and material reality.
On his right (our left) we see a path leading from the water, across what appears to be an open field, into distant mountains. A huge golden crown sits atop the mountain peak, with a bright golden aura around it. This is to remind us that the spiritual “path” will bring us higher and higher until we reach our final destination, realization of the Over Soul, Universal Mind, God, or whatever you choose to call the Divine.
The Christian Bible speaks of “moderation in all things.” In Buddhism we are taught “The Middle Path”. The path of spirituality is one of temperance and moderation. It is necessary that we live in this material world and we should live it in good health so we can maintain the necessary strength to live a spiritual life. This isn’t an easy life to live; it takes toughness and resilience . so we have to to keep ourselves in good condition to walk the spiritual path but always in moderation, a balance of body and Spirit.
This path is a tempering process for us. As iron is inferior to tempered steel, so we are inferior without this tempering process that makes us stronger. Many times, when hardship becomes a big part of our life , it is only this tempering process. If nothing ever went wrong, we’d be unfit to really live. Every time we are able to overcome life’s little tests while maintaining our spirituality, We grow in spirit . This is tempering, or Temperance.
When you meditate with Temperance let it remind you to keep your life in balance, to take care of your physical needs as you follow your spiritual pathway. Let It remind you that every problem you face and overcome is another step on the road to what you are meant to be a realized individualized part of The One Great Whole. You are, you know, whether you know it or not. But, when you realize it (accept it as real in your life) you will actually become much more than you are now… And you’ll Know It!
