It's coming! The June solstice--summer solstice for us in the northern hemisphere, the longest day and my favorite holiday of the year. (Yes, even more so than the December solstice, when we Cauldronites do our "Up All Night" celebration.)

Every year I celebrate by it by staying "Out All Day": From watching the sunrise in the A.M. to seeing its last rays set below the horizon, I'm forbidden to set foot indoors, except for the briefest possible bathroom breaks. It's easier to pull off in a city, where there are outdoor cafes and vendors and things, but I've done it in the wild too, where it can be even better (it just takes more planning).

It's a day to smell the roses, to curl up under a tree with a book, to take life at a slower pace, to indulge the senses with outdoor music and fresh fruit and ice cream and tall, cool cocktails, to feel the grass beneath your feet, to bask in the sun, to savor life at its fullest.

Normally I walk or bike miles and miles, discovering new neighborhoods; but my knee is mending from (relatively minor) surgery, so this year I'm spending the whole thing in my roof garden--planting, pruning, weeding, watching it grow. I've always wanted to do a Day in the Life of the garden, keeping watch on it on the solstice from start to finish, so this will be the year.

Do you plan to celebrate the solstice? How?
I didn't realize it was the solstice until about 11am. Wasn't sure what to do, since I was with my family. I told my GMM that I needed to do something pagan-y "maybe take all my clothes off and dance around?" She and I agreed however that some of the plants in the yard would not be conducive to barefoot naked dancing.

I did however walk up to the cemetery where my Grandaddy (GMM's husband) and my Great-grandparents, and lots of other ancestors are buried. I gave them water and flowers and peaches, and I cleared the debris away. I think I managed to say hello without offending them, but then, since my grandaddy is there, I know he'd whack anybody who gave me trouble!
KARMA: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I just got back from my first big festival!!!  Went with some of the local Pagans that I have been celebrating with for a couple of years now, and they were hosting so I was a part of the planning and organizing (and got to call Fire in the main ritual).  We had a great time, there were classes which were wonderful, and several offerings made in different traditions which were lovely.  I got to meet a lot of wonderful new people, and we all bonded together in the agony of the biting flies that took their pint of blood (quite literally) no matter what ways we tried to keep them away!

I just got back from a four day camping trip in Lincoln National Forest. We had to push the trip to after the actual Solstice, but we had the entire camp ground to ourselves. Three nights in a tent, camp fire, and real starlight. We were visited by feral horses, foxes, ravens, hawks, mule deer and elk. On the last night we were circled by something that had our dog acting very protective we think it was either a mountain lion or a bob cat. It was a wonderful trip, hope to get back up there before Fall.

Sounds awesome! Where is Lincoln National Forest?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I'm really excited. My (very Christian, yet nature-aware) mom will be visiting, so nothing overtly Druid-y will be going on, and I'm a little bummed about that, but I'm sure we can do something to celebrate "the first day of summer" as she always called it when we were growing up. We always knew when the solstices were because she always remembered and mentioned it.

I am a little sad that my altar/shrine will have to be tucked away, but Lughnasad is coming, and the Equinox. And I think the gods and ancestors are fairly understanding. They seem to be.

The Druid Prayer, in its original version by Iolo Morganwg, would probably be acceptable for your Christian relatives and friends.

One of my favorite sabbats!  Soooo excited to have some garden time, charge some crystals, make a fire, cook some food and say goodbye to the growth of light.  I think for me, my spirituality has made me notice how quickly the seasons zip by!  It feels like just yesterday that I was watching the minute of gain on the sunset and celebrating the return of the light.  Now, we celebrate the longest day and also the very very beginning of the return of winter.  Crazy right? Also can't wait for harvest time!  Maybe I just love all the celebrations 🙈
