Associations with Education/Teaching/Learning
« on: April 30, 2014, 10:49:32 am »
I'm currently a student teacher, and when procrastinating from doing work today I was wondering if there would be someone/thing within Baltic and/or Slavic circles that would be associated with Education/Teaching/Learning.

I found a passing reference to a Lithuanian goddess named Lajbegelda, literally nothing more than an entry in a list on Wikipedia, that said she's a goddess of knowledge. That's the best I've got; in my own practice I tend to go to Norse or Hindu gods there.

Hmm. Can I suggest Mother Laima to you?

The first reason I suggest her is because I read in "Of Gods and Men", by Algirdas J. Greimas, that her predictions of the future were probably due to her knowledge, not magical powers. The second reason is due to a poem I read at http://www.latvianstuff.com/Songs_Laima&Dievs.html, that specifically mentiones Laima giving sage advice. (This last one is a bit flimsy, evidence wise, but she still seems a perfect fit.)

Apart from Laima, I'd also look into Dievas Senelis (a Lithuanian god). According to Wikipedia, he's a teacher and a judge of humans. The stories in "Of Gods and Men" seem to support this.

One last thing- perhaps it would be a good idea to look into 'parental' gods? I don't know how old the students you're teaching are, but if they're young, it might help to contact a deity that's said to watch over children. (Just a thought.)

Hope this helps!
