Wanta go drone hunting?
« on: January 19, 2014, 06:08:29 pm »
In one Colorado town, it's open season on drones
Jan 19, 2014 Matt Pearce, Los Angeles Times

DEER TRAIL, Colo. -- Wearing a black duster and a black cowboy hat, Phil Steel walked to the front of the meeting room armed with a Nerf gun and a smile.

The U.S. Army veteran was there to pitch his big idea: an ordinance that would legalize and regulate drone hunting inside Deer Trail city limits. If approved, residents could pay $25 to get a drone-hunting license; the town would pay a bounty for every drone bagged.

They're just picking this up? The Colbert Report covered this back in November. (Also, something tells me that destroying government property would not go over well, drone or not.)

To me it doesn't look like they care which drones they are hitting, as they indicate that the drone could be carrying anything, from pizza to drugs/drug money to a bomb delivered to a stadium.

There not going to be a point system? No cash rewards? No extra points if the drone shoots back?

When ebay and amazon start drone deliveries, and they start getting shot down, won't they arm them?

...I don't see too many delivery trucks driving around with armed guards, and I imagine they get robbed from time to time. I suspect drones will simply be discontinued if the cost-benefit ratio starts to unravel.

You don't think the logical conclusion would be that eBay and Amazon would discontinue a service that is losing them money (something companies do frequently when services they start do not end up profitable and cost them more problems in the long run), considering that it would be an lengthy, hugely expensive and possibily non-fruitful venture to try and fight in the courts for them to arm drones that could fire at anyone the drone deems a threat?

Deer you can at least eat. Unless you're in favor of some kind of modern equivalent to robbing a Wells Fargo stagecoach and then eating your stolen pizza in victory?

I don't know. The minds of vandals and criminals don't tend to make sense to me.

I'm surprised that this is still around.  This was briefly in the news back in August 2013 I believe.

Anyway, Deer Trail is a pretty small place.  I can't imagine they'll have much drone action in that area.  Seems like bored bloviating to me.

On an unrelated note, Deer Trail is a nice little place to stop and get gas on the way out to a storm chase.
