Practicing magick when you have a chronic illness

It is safe to practice magick when dealing with chronic fatigue? The trouble is I never know when the fatigue will hit me.

If you find the answer lemme know, okay? ;)

Seriously though, I think it depends on what sort of magic you're doing, if energy is part of it, how you process energy, how that processing affects your physical/mental stores, how that plays in with your fatigue... it may be a matter of determining which kinda of magic affect your fatigue the least.

What's your magic and/or energy work experience so far? More details about your personal situation might help folks give you useful feedback. :)

I've been doing candle spells for divination and removal of negativity as well as getting to know my dieties. I raise energy by trance and meditation.  It seems harder to achieve a trance when I'm tired, guess I'm afraid ill fall asleep :).

As Sage says, it depends on what the magic is. (There's some more threads in the Chronic Illness SIG you might also find useful that talk about this.)

It also depends on how your body reacts. Do you have a few minutes warning before you need to fall over and rest? If so, then candle magic is probably okay.

If you can go from "okay to be doing this" to "really not okay" in a matter of seconds or a minute or two (and at some points, with my own health stuff, it's been that bad), then doing things with fire is probably a bad move. (Or anything else where cleaning it up later would be dangerous or much harder.)

For meditation, I generally don't consider falling asleep to be the end of the world - I mean, it's not great for the goal of the meditation, but for a lot of kinds of meditation work, it just means I didn't get everything done I wanted, not that something bad will happen. (Some kinds of astral space work, or guided meditations can be harder to get back from if you don't come back correctly, but these methods usually indicate that that is a concern up front.)

I do often find I really need to split up the ritual prep into several steps (usually over several days) - one to clean thoroughly, one to prep altar space and what I'm using, one to do the work and do things that require immediate cleanup, one to do any cleanup that can be left for later. This is annoying, but now I know I sometimes need to do it that way, not that hard to plan for if I need to.

Agreed. Increasingly I do folk magic rather than energy-based magic; which isn't to say that energy work isn't involved in folk magic, but it can be very practical in a way that allows me to control how much energy I'm using, if that makes any sense. I no longer try to do anything involving energy-raising. Even casting a circle (which I used to do in an OBOD context while doing magic) exhausts me. I tried to work out if I was 'doing it wrong', but in the end I decided it just wasn't working for me. That doesn't mean no one with a chronic illness will be able to do energy work - I'm sure it depends on the person, their condition, and their level of skill with energy work (mine is basic at best). But I think maybe there are forms of magic that are inherently more and less exhausting. (Or that might just be my experience.)

OP, you might want to try different forms of magic and see what your body and mind deal with best.
