Day of the Dead Skulls & Pagan Pride Day
« on: August 09, 2011, 02:07:05 pm »
OK.  Two questions.

One: Where would one find unpainted non-sugar Day of the Dead skulls? The ones I found online are meant to be salt and pepper shakers, and I don't know how well those would go over in general... I just want to paint skulls without them having to be a pair.

Two: How well do you think little Day of the Dead skulls/painted boxes would go over during Pagan Pride Day? I'm thinking of painting some to sell, but... do you guys think there will be an audience for them?

Thanks!

kat.

Most likely you'd have to do your own. Plaster in the molds designed for candy have worked well for me in the past.

Have you tried looking on Etsy? That sort of thing I could imagine being on there.

I would personally be interested, but I'm sure my views do not accurately reflect the general pagan population. :P If it's closer to Halloween/Samhain/Day of the Dead/etc. (like within a month or two?) you might have some luck.

I think that's what I'd have to do, also. I don't do well with sculpting and all that, so... we'll  see. I don't know if I can find a skull mold, but the search goes on.

That's where the ones that were for the salt and pepper shakers were, but I didn't find any more...

I'll try painting some boxes and see... because PPD is in mid-Sept, so we'll see!

Also, when I make a post... how do I make it so I see my own replies?

I misplaced mine in one of the various moves, or I'd bring them to you next time I'm up that way. Unfortunately, they're nowhere to be found.

Nnngh, they're $9 and $11 each. X_X That's a lot of money to paint something someone might not buy... but that's a great link, so thank you.

I imagine the closer you are to Mexico, the better they will go over in general. I suspect they'd sell fairly well at Pagan Pride events in South Texas, for example.

I sort of though the same, the closer to Mexico the better they'd be received.  Move away from there and I can see it either being seen as a HooDoo / VoooDoo type scenario (think New Orleans and such) or more Satanic (especially in parts of the bible belt).  In some area's I could even see it as more counter-culture such as Bike Clubs or your Gothic influences.

Personaly I wouldn't buy them as skulls are not representative of my beliefs or practices.  Yet my son would buy them simply because they are skulls and he collects that sort of thing.

They sell these at my local craft store around Halloween.

Everyone in my pagan homeschool group loved Dia de los Muertos (sugar skull decorating was the highlight of the party for the kids).

I live a long way from Mexico, but Dia de los Muertos is a big deal hereabouts (at least in urban centers).  And not just among the Mexican American community.  I think it's pretty safe to assume that urban areas are going to be more receptive to Dia de los Muertos imagery, with at least some more rural settings possibly less so.

I'd say the thing there is that The Day of The Dead celebration occurs on Nov 1 so is close enough that most associate it to Halloween.  For many a time of parties and such.  It is in all probability as commercialized as Christmas is and is more of a party time than an actual observance of a spiritual practice.

Yet Pagan Pride in most area's I've seen falls in Sept time frame and is associated to Pagan practices and pride in such.  It is not associated to Halloween or the candy and parties that that name inspires in the minds of most people.

Granted there are enough "Halloween" costumes to make many of them look like some sort of REN fair or worse.  Even to the extent of who is more witchier than another in apperance which I personaly think makes them a joke vice something that paints the pagan community in a positive light to the non-pagan.
