A Kemetic Devotional
« on: August 08, 2011, 04:11:42 pm »
(x-posted to the KIN and HoN forums)

I've been thinking about projects I could do to give back to the community, and one idea I've come across is to make a Kemetic devotional. I found this definition of what a devotional is on the internet:

Quote
What exactly is a "devotional" book? The very word "devote" means, to set apart or consecrate - and so a devotional book is any book which assists us in the moments we take for quiet, personal time with God in secret. A book which helps you start or finish the day with some reflections on God's Word, always with practical applications to consider and examine ourselves with, is a devotional book.

I was thinking I could make one on how to live in Ma'at, and include quotes from wisdom literature and meditations based on the 42 Declarations of Innocence, as well as contributions from other Kemetic practitioners of practical ways they live in Ma'at. I would also look at Maulana Karenga's book on Ma'at to get an idea of how to present Kemetic ethics. This is but one focus, but my questions are:

What topic or theme would you like to see in a devotional?
What would you like to see included?

I also had the idea of making them short, one or two pages at most, and give the idea of using the "oracle format," in which a practitioner in need of advice could open to any page and get some little bit of wisdom. What do you all think?

As I mentioned on KIN, I think it would be interesting to see some of the wisdom texts used, quoted, etc. And I think it'd be awesome to have a devotional type book for Kemetics.

I agree with this.  Since (as you all probably know by now) I'm new to Kemeticism, I feel like this could not only be interesting, but could be a good educational tool as well.  Especially since it is a devotional book, it could feel a lot more personal than just reading the texts themselves without knowing the interpretations of other people who have read them as well.  (I'm sorry if this seems a bit scattered, my head isn't really all here right now.)
<3 Rest in peace, Christiana. I love you so much, and I miss you like crazy already. At least you\'re not hurting anymore...May you ascend. <3

Just in case, have you seen any of the publications of Biblioteca Alexandrina?  It is Neos Alexandria's in house publishing company.

Yes, actually Helms told me about it before. :)  I don't know if there's a way to preview the contents, though.

You can preview them on Amazon.

Sounds like a wonderful idea! I think I would be most interested in on practical ways on living in Ma'at, so that could be something you could focus on.

You'll have to come back and tell us when the book will be out!

Actually, given your name, I'd love to see something done for Bast. I had thought of organizing something for Her next, if I don't botch assembling The Morrigan's, but if you beat me to it, by all means...

Though, I do like the oracle idea as well...

Probably anything showing an adaptation of the prayers and practices by modern practitioners would be unique and appreciated.

If you haven't talked to the Neos Alexandria folks yet, I think it would be worthwhile. They have experience publishing books, and they haven't done much that is specifically Kemetic recently. They're looking for people to propose and edit books.
