Mythology books and references!

The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt, Richard H. Wilkinson
The Ancient Gods Speak: A Guide to Egyptian Religion, Donald B. Redford

Archaeowiki has a lot of academic references for individual gods - look up the god and see what you turn up in the bibliography.  Warning:  this produces huge huge booklists.

I am not sure whether I want to separate out 'religion overviews', as they contain information about the understanding we have of the natures of the gods, but are a semi-different topic?  But for now I will put my standard recs here:

Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt: The One And the Many, Erik Hornung
Daily Life of the Egyptian Gods, Dmitri Meeks and Christine Favard-Meeks
Egyptian Religion, Siegfried Morenz
Temple of the Cosmos, Jeremy Naydler

The Great Goddesses of Egypt by Barbara Lesko
Egyptian Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses and Traditions of Ancient Egypt by Geraldine Pinch

FYI, Thoth, the Hermes of Egypt (1922) is out of copyright and available online HERE. Not read it yet, but Per Djehuty draws heavily from that book.

Another Thoth resource I've found useful is Hathor and Thoth: Two Key Figures of the Ancient Egyptian Religion (1973) by CJ Bleeker, but unfortunately still in copyright.

I would like to point out that this book contains more Hermetic than Kemetic material.

Darkhawk has a quote from this book about Hetharu and her crown from this book that is quite inaccurate.
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

Mythology books

Is there some "must read" booklist? I am currently reading Jan Assman's book on Ma'at and was wondering if his work had any impact as I haven't seen him listed.

Assmann isn't a "must read" in most people's minds because he's a heavy slog, and if people had to pass through that "must read" filter a lot of them wouldn't make it.

He is bloody amazing though.

Oh YES!

Certain passages are quite heavy - but I am amazed at how easygoing most of it is (for such a complex subject). I may have turned into a fangirl of his work ;)

I would love to add another book to the list for whoever may want to read more about Djehuty:

Patrick Boylan, M.A.: "Thoth, the Hermes of Egypt".

One caveat I have though: Boylan starts his analysis with Ptolemaic material and then "goes back in time" towards earlier sources including the pyramid texts. His approach is comparatistic - his goal is to trace cultic constants and syncretisms through the enormous time period those sources represent and to deconstruct them in an attempt to uncover earlier ones.  So reading should be done always with a timeline in mind.
I also appreciated his geographical approach concerning His cult expansion.

It was an enlightening read <3

Are there other treatises on Djehuty around?
Currently I am also looking for one on the fish cults and only found a post doctoral thesis by Ingrid Gamert-Wallert.

The only thing I can think of off top of head is Bleeker's "Hathor and Thoth: Two Key Figures" but I have not read it because it is a PITA to source.

Thank you for the reminder. I did encounter this book during my search, but only had the few bits on Google to sample.

Found it now - indeed it is extremely difficult to access.

I am very grateful for your help :) When I finish reading books I can leave more information here, of it's ok :D
