Resident Evil

The first time I ever played Resident Evil was also the first time I ever used a controller with the vibraty thingie. When a zombie attacked me and the controller started vibrating I threw the controller as hard as I could across the room. Never played that game again.

That game was the reason why I stuck with turn-based until RE5 which was more of an adventure game. (Seriously, booby-trapped temple full of treasure. Sure this wasn't meant to be a Lara Croft crossover? Whar mai zombeez??)

So, yeah, I agree to that being on a list. xD

Yep, RE2 specifically.  Classic zombie-SHTF scenario.

I've never been much of a computer gamer, but I've had a lot of fun with playing and GMing Call of Cthulhu (a tabletop role-playing game).

Definitely the Fatal Frame series. They're similar in style to the Amnesia games in that you don't have traditional weapons, but you do have a camera to do damage/capture a spirit. It's chock full of Japanese folklore, and has this creepy macabre feeling that really sets you on edge while playing. It's also not a very happy game, but I think there are a couple of "happy" endings.

I also can't play it at night. Or without the lights on. Or without people around.

i also might have stopped playing it for the longest time

I've been enjoying Die2Nite recently.  It's a browser based zombie survival game.  At its heart though, it's a game of social interaction, the zombies are there to give urgency to the situation.

I just got Vampire the Masquerade-Bloodlines, and so far, it is has pretty neat story.

I've also played Secret World (an modern day horror MMO), and it has fantastic stories.  Their Halloween event (which they admit is their big event of the year because it fits the mood of the game) was ten scary stories, written by different NPC's in the game, and you had to go investigate if they were true or not.  It was pretty neat to read about the different urban legend type scary stories (like the one where someone wakes up in a bathtub with their organs harvested).

Have you checked out the user-made patches and mods for that game? I thought it was pretty awesome that after Troika went under that people began developing patches to help fix bugs, re-integrate content, and even created clan mods for the game.

And now I am going to pretend I never had the idea to re-install the whole thing nope nope nope.

Other than the unofficial patch (which was needed to even launch the game), I haven't yet.  I try (very hard....sometimes it is very hard!) to play through a game the first time the way it was released before looking into mods.  But I will definitely have to check those out after the first go through :)

Silent Hill - the original still scares the crap out of me

I'm a Silent Hill fan myself (2 is my favorite probably because it's the first I played). The only Resident Evil game I've ever really fallen in love with was RE4, and while I love it I don't find it to be a particularly scary game.

Probably my #1 favorite horror game is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It scared me so bad I had to walk away from the computer at times, not to mention that the art for it was amazing, and I loved the storyline. Just a great game overall in my book.

Super late, but I just had to join in on this!

-Fatal Frame is my top favorite survival horror series. There's one ghost in the fourth game that still freaks me out, every single time.
-Resident Evil is another series. I'm a squealing mess every time I play it.
-Silent Hill is another freaky one I've enjoyed a lot.
