Military Removes Islamist Government in Egypt
« on: July 03, 2013, 09:07:09 pm »
In a not very surprising development, the Egyptian military has removed Islamist President Morsy and his government from power. The military suspended the new constitution and placed Adly Mansour, head of the Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court, in power as interim President. As usual, the military seems to have to support of a good majority of Egyptians. The Islamist Muslim Brotherhood is annoyed, of course. Regular (non-Islamist) Muslim clergy and Coptic Christian clergy are supporting the military.

Definitely not a surprise -- just a matter of time. What interesting times we live in.

Indeed.

I'm quite interested to see how (or whether) our foreign policy will to greet the new leadership after having been so buddy-buddy with the old one.

I've been waiting for this to happen. Hopefully, this means that things will get better quickly for the Egyptian people.

Am I the only one who thinks it's especialy interesting that the military has such support from the people and that in return, they do seem to be looking out for them to some degree. I don't think I've seen that a lot in recent history.I wonder how long it will take until the military starts putting their own people forward as president.

If the Egyptian military will do a better job of preventing extremists (of any kind) from hijacking the process than they did after Mubarak was forced out, things will probably work out much better for the Egyptian people. The Egyptian military really does not like being in charge and so always pushes for a quick transition back to civilian rule of some type. While this is generally a very good thing, they need to be hands on enough to at least try to ensure that they do have to repeat the process in two or three years.  They failed at that the last time around. Hopefully they learned from what happened.

Yep, that was one of my predictions from the gitgo. The US public would end up supporting a military dictatorship over an Islamist govt, and that there is no hope for a liberal secular democracy there at present

Well, mostly sort of civilian.  The military will have a major veto over large policy changes, they won't be involved in day to day running of things.

Except for when we used to back the old Muslim Brotherhood regime and our president, ya know, still does.

Not entirely sure how this helps anyone, be it Egypt or America, at all.
