My Walk with Brighid
« on: February 09, 2013, 05:30:32 pm »
Lately, I've been feeling really, really drawn to Brighid. I've had several conversations with her and I feel really connected to her. I've been reading up on Brighid lore and I feel closer to her than ever. She's pretty much the only deity that I've ever felt close to. I've definitely decided to develop my relationship with her and I have you guys to thank for that. :)

What kind of special things do you do to honor Brighid? I'm going to start writing her poetry and lighting a candle for her when I can. :)

My fiction writing is devoted to her and Oghma both. I have an oil lamp that I purchased and that's my light for her during meditations and such. She also has half of my altar space with some items specific to her.

All my creative enterprises are devoted to her.  My writing, by wand making, all of it is done with her in mind.  She is not always (or even usually) the subject of these pieces, but they are for her.

Candles and Poetry were all she ever demanded of me, and they are very good ways to honor her.  Last year, in preparation for Imbolc, I wrote a poem every day for a month.

I've volunteered at the hospital around the corner 4-8 hours a week in her honor.  It's helped me get out of the house too, so it's a bonus :)  Then there's the knitting of squares for the hospital (to be pieced together for afghans that go to the cancer centre) and baby hats for the preemie wards in two of the local hospitals.  I've been doing htis for about two years now.  I also light a candle once in awhile for Her.

I keep Brighid's flame every night (using my olive oil lamp and/or a very cool mason jar tealight holder that was a gift from a friend), without fail, even if it's just for a few minutes between getting home and going to bed. No matter how tired it crappy I feel. (I keep an LED candle in my bag, too, for those extremely rare occasions when I'm caught somewhere else overnight and don't have access to a real flame, which actually happened a couple of weeks ago.)  I also have a small travel altar I take on trips.  I keep an LED candle always on for Her at home, too.

When it's a Cill shift, I add a second LED candle (plus other things). I'm currently a member of 3 shifts, and often cover shifts that don't have a flame keeper for some reason.

I do nightly offerings of cool water and token amounts of either whatever I'm eating or something like a dark chocolate truffle, a little beer, or -- for special occasions -- Irish Mist (a liquor) or Irish whiskey (Jameson's usually).

I have a couple of pieces of jewellery I wear for Her at all times (barring extreme situations, like medical procedures).  One is a beautiful, handmade silver Brighid's cross pendant (I've added a small gold star that was my great-grandmother's to the same chain (a reference to the Lady of the Stars, which some readers of the post will understand).  The others are 2 silver rings, one with a flame engraved on it, the other with 2 Irish phrases ("Welcome, Brighid" on the outside, which is from the Carmina Gaedelica, and "I am forever Hers" on the inside)  I have several other pieces of Brighid jewellery that I wear almost as often, but those 3 are the "always" pieces.

Interestingly, my husband and 2 daughters also wear Brighid's crosses all the time, too, even though they are not what I'd call "Brighid kids".

I have a tattoo of a Brighid's cross on the back of my hand, and another tat of my altar here inside a sun on the inside of my wrist -- both for Brighid.

My theater work (lighting design and stage management) is always dedicated to Her, as is my family's animal rescue work

I try to do anything I can to help other people who are learning about Her, which usually means providing info (I've amassed a really great personal library over the years) or sometimes just a supportive ear.

Oh, and I'm working with some partners on a very long-term project to develop a spiritual practice centered on Her.

There are other things, too, but those are more private.
