Love Spells

Here's how I've grokked the different ways that love spells "work"

  • By avoiding an open, honest, conversation with another person on equal footing about the situation. The caster tampers with a specific target's will or perspective, on a level that the caster has dominion over and the target does not, regardless of (or even specifically working against) the will of the target. Or if these are considered separate then it works against the alignment of the target's egoic will and metaphysical Will.

If we grant that it is possible for a love spell such as this to take effect, then it leaves the target manipulated, their autonomy violated, and used as an object for the fulfillment of the caster's desires rather than respected in the fullness of their humanity/knowledge/consent/Will. That probably means that it isn't love, but the target is essentially manipulated into thinking that it is. And, of course, such a power play is how the caster may have already defined "love" to themselves.

For some other reason this very process appears to be the most sought-after kind of love spell, despite the general agreement (that I've seen here in TC) that it's just the wrongest of wrong.

  • A "mating call" spell, where the caster sends energy to the cosmos to the effect of making their desire known to those who would fulfill it. While those who would answer, may not be practitioners of magick themselves, the consent of the answerer is central to the fulfillment of the love spell's terms-- rather than disregarded, unlike the previous example.
  • Divination, in which it is often granted that these relationships are already predestined, and the caster passively empowers themselves with the knowledge of what shall already unfold. Consent of either party, in this context, is like asking, "When is purple?"
  • A placebo spell, which is going through the motions of a love spell but not really doing anything on the spiritual plane, just so that the person with the desire for romance has the confidence to act to pursue it at all, mundanely, instead of (f'r instance) just wishing that someone else would read their mind and make all the moves for them. Since this begins with personal development, the reach of the magick does not exceed personal boundaries.
  • An often non-romantic love spell, where other people are in trouble and ask to be nurtured and spiritually supported, and generally healing-loving energy is sent.
  • Bloodbinding. I've heard this come up once in a while, and it appears to be a magickal binding that requires the consent of both parties, like a metaphysical marriage. For some reason, I've only heard the stories where one or both partners regret it, but don't know how to undo it... so, they remain telepathic with each other, and unsuccessfully diverging with one another's lives, creeping each other out and hating themselves for even getting into it, and basically maintaining a strong connection that they just can't stand.
... Have I misunderstood, oversimplified, or missed something? Please do weigh in.

On first glance this one type need not be done for the caster but can be done for another and it need not be specific to one person. Like in creating a mist to be worn as a perfume or an oil, or a philter or tonic. The consent is there because the person using it would know what it was, but the same item or one from the same batch could be used by many people.
