Up All Night: A Technopagan Winter Solstice 2012
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:40:21 pm »
Hey, what is this thread? The night beginning at sunset on Friday, December 21, 2012, is the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. To celebrate the winter solstice (a.k.a. Yule, Midwinter, and probably other things, depending on your tradition), a bunch of us plan to stay up all night and post here in this thread off and on throughout, sharing our experiences or random thoughts...sharing photos or artwork throughout the evening...or just encouraging each other to stay awake!

So if you’re trying to stay up till dawn, or just want to pop in to converse with those of us who are, this is the place! (Or if you're lucky enough to be in the Southern Hemisphere, enjoying the warmth and sun of summer solstice, tell us what we're missing!)

In that spirit, I'm yet again resurrecting a modest rhyme I composed specifically for our winter solstice efforts. Tradition dictates that I offer it as invocation to kick things off:

A WINTER SOLSTICE REVEILLE

by Altair

Light dwindles, life despairs
A bitter chill is in the air
The sun departs, and with it goes
A fruitful season free of woes
As winter’s icy grip takes hold
The sleeping landscape to enfold
Many hours of dark must pass
Before the sun returns at last
To make its long-awaited climb
With promise of a flowering time

Until that hour, let dark prevail
Greet longest night with strong wassail
Sing and dance, feast and drink
Or solemnly reflect and think
From strange and hidden wells partake
With one rule only: Stay awake!
From dusk till dawn, hear our refrain:
Let the solstice revels reign

[In the last line, swap in the word “vigil” for “revels” if the feeling is more contemplative than festive]
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

The thread is up!

(I figured I'd get it up way in advance--by the reckoning of my time zone on the U.S. eastern seaboard, anyway--so that it's ready and waiting for Cauldronites in Europe, Asia, Australia, etc., where sunset may already be approaching.)

Love the poem! I was actually thinking I might spend the night writing poetry of my own...after I finish this last final paper and study for my history test in the morning. Solstice or not, I think this will be an all-nighter.

On every world, wherever people are, in the deepest part of the winter, at the exact mid-point, everybody stops and turns and hugs. As if to say, "Well done. Well done, everyone! We're halfway out of the dark."

One Aussie checking in to tell you about the awesome hot weather here today. <3 Lovely blue skies and nice hot weather (but not too hot!), though there is a cold wind blowing about that's been helpfully reminding me it ain't summer everywhere.

I haven't done my Solstice ritual yet; it's almost 2pm here, and I think I might do it this afternoon, otherwise it might not get done at all. I wouldn't want to put it off only to find out the world ended overnight and I've missed my chance to do it tomorrow. ;) That, and while I had half-planned to do it later tonight, I don't think I'll get a chance because we're having people over for dinner tonight, and I'd rather do a summer Solstice ritual while the sun's up.

I actually did some Solstice art! I painted things! They aren't the most amazing masterpieces ever, but I'll post a photo of them once I've offered them up. One's for the Winter Solstice (and for Harpocrates) and one's for the Summer solstice (with vague references to Sol Invictus and probably Helios and probably Ra, in an abstract kind of way).

Another from t'other side of the world here, sun's now heading for the horizon, should be dusk in an hour tops. Seems weird to this Englishman, I expect summer solstice sundown at around 10pm, not 6.30pm...

And in keeping with our non-theme of "Apocalypse Now", here's my first contribution:

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

SO jealous! They day just started here in NYC, and it's a dreary, rainy, windswept mess (though for late December, relatively mild). Images from the Chicago area--where apparently they got dumped on with snow--are making me shudder, however.

Just woke up here in Virginia and it's about the same - cold, windy, rainy, and dreary as fuck. Can I go back to sleep until the sun sets?

Just popping in to say hello! 4:30a here, and the sun won't be coming up for another 4 hours. (We're catching a 7a flight.) I sorta feel your pain? Man, I gotta say all my prayers when I get home and somehow find the privacy to bloodlet as well.

Cheers everyone!
