Books recommended for Runes
« on: July 19, 2011, 12:13:12 pm »
I have a love of runes but only one exceptionally simple book on them so I was hoping that someone here could recommend some reading for me :)

Futhark by Edred Thorsson was a decent read. I would not recommend Ralph Blum.  I would also recommend reading some of the work by Kveldulf Gundarsson.

My first book on runes was called 'Rune Magic' by Nigel Pennick and I found it to be really good.

I second the recommendation of Edred Thorsson as well as the panning of Blum.  He just made up his own pseudo-Christian interpretation of the Runes and really doesn't even bear mentioning.
In my own (very) humble opinion, you'd be best served by just making your own set and exploring them one at a time.

I misread what you were asking the first time I saw this (I thought you wanted only books, and preferably simple ones... d'oh) so I didn't reply.

There are quite a few websites that have rune info, but the one I see recommended most, and that I think highly of, is this one: http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/ - I posted that link to another thread (by ZombyFrogg) at around the same time you first asked, so you may have seen it already.

My favourite book is Stephen Pollington's Rudiments of Runelore It has a good historical background and all of the rune poems.
My writing blog is very occasionally updated with poetry and short stories. My gardening blog is more active.

My first book on the runes was Runes by Jonathan Dee and I found it very good :)
