Raising the stakes?
« on: July 16, 2011, 10:53:40 pm »
I wrote the below in another thread and one person said they'd like to see a discussion on it, so I thought I'd bring it over:

Quote
Does anyone else here remember the ex-witch forums? There was a ton of ex-witches there who said they realized they were working with demons/the devil when the stakes kept getting higher and they felt like they had to start offering blood.

(Had no idea what to title this, so feel free to rename the thread.)
The pace of progress in artificial intelligence (I’m not referring to narrow AI) is incredibly fast. [...] The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most.--Elon Musk

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

I haven't seen that thread yet (can you link back to it?), but I have offered my own blood on a few occasions. I've never associated it with "demons" at all, it's just the most precious and personal thing that I have to offer. It's one of the best ways I've found to establish a connection and control the path of a spell when it's really, really important that I get a certain result.

Sometimes the act of drawing blood can be... an odd and unsettling experience, but it's never been about raising the stakes, so much as a, this is my level of commitment to this work sort of thing. When I offer blood, I'm saying this is so important to me, I'll give my life blood to make it happen.

Maybe that is raising the stakes in a way, but it's not about demons or the devil. It's about my level of commitment, and how much something means to me.

And here's the linkback to the post/thread your self-quote came from:

The title looks fine - it helps steer the convo toward discussion of the concept, rather than discussion of another forum.
