Thanks, Randall!

I just started this last night- I've made it through the introduction- and it looks like a very interesting read. The definition of religion that the author posits is much more useful to me, as a non-Christian, than the typical Western European Christian conception that carried over to NA. I expect to keep reading daily, but in small chunks to properly take notes/digest the info, but I'll post here with more thoughts as I have them.

Has anyone else read this?

1 - no, even if I didn't have 50 or so books on my to-read list, I'd have to order it.

2 - can you post the definition of religion that is being used?

Haven't read it, but part of my studies are in ancient biblical texts so I might see if my uni library has it - looks quite interesting.

"Religion is an intense and sustained cultivation of a style of life that heightens awareness of morally binding connections between the self, the human community, and the most essential structures of reality. Religions posit various orders of reality and help individuals and groups to negotiate their relations with those orders." (page 5 of the first edition.)

The author discusses the Western/Central European Christian conception of religion from pages 4-5, but doesn't spell it out so concisely; he spends pages 5-9 breaking down the definition I quoted above into fragments for further thought, as well.

I didn't realize when I got it (via BookMooch) that it was a university publication or that it's essentially a slim textbook- it reads, to me, very much like an intelligent classroom lecture or discussion. I find it very engaging.

Thanks. I'll have to hit world cat when I get caught up.

Hmm, that definition by itself looks interesting for a TC thread. Randall, any objection to starting an interfaith discussion about that one paragraph?

Be my guest. It could be an interesting discussion.
