Something for the Dead?
« on: August 02, 2012, 01:49:20 pm »
My boyfriend's great grandmother passed away today and I'd like to do something to honor her spirit. Any suggestions? She lived in South Carolina and I live in PA and I don't think I have any rosemary but I'll be sure to check.

You might compose a traveling song for her.  A song to sing of her life, tell of her strengths and weaknesses.  To praise her spirit and the way she lived and what she leaves behind and the lineage she brough into the future.

Well, that would require my boyfriend's help and he's still very upset. He's calm at least, but I don't think he'd be able to do it. That and I'm not much for songwriting

Strictly speaking, you're supposed to wait 70 days after someone's death before you put them on an Akhu shrine/altar.

But if your boyfriend or you wanted to, you could:

1) Pray to Nebet Het or Aset or Wepwawet or Yinepu to keep her travel safe and offer them water or beer etc.  Nebet Het has a specific prayer for the dead in the Pyramid Texts.  It's also in the Ancient Egyptian Prayerbook by Tamara Siuda if you have it.

2) Pray for her safe journey into the Duat

3) Offer to your or his ancestors to help her/welcome her etc.

ok, as far as the shrine goes, my boyfriend isn't Kemetic, in fact he suggested the idea from his knowledge of Japanese culture. I didn't know about the 70 days thing either, I'm not KO, though I was considering taking some classes (if they're free, cuz I'm poor). Anpu and Wepwawet are the two gods I worship, so I'll definitely pray to them and make offerings. Thank you for the suggestions, and you too monsnoleedra, I appreciate you both. I'll certainly think about them later when it's my turn to do this for a family member of mine.

For the seventy days after someone goes to the West, they are travelling through liminal space.  Our mourning and tears support them; our prayers for their passage protect and guide them; our magic can give them strength.

It's done entirely through email, and optional IRC chat.
