Favorite Discworld books?
« on: July 13, 2011, 04:05:31 pm »
I want to read more of Discworld, but my normal method of starting with the first and reading chronologically did not work particularly well. I can't recall offhand the name of the first Discworld novel, but I do remember not liking it much.

So far I've read Small Gods and Pyramids; I liked the former quite a bit, and liked the latter well enough.

So, what are your favorites?

Small Gods is probably my absolute favourite. After that Soul Music, Moving Pictures, Guards Guards and Carpe Jugulum.

Hope you find some you enjoy :D

Small Gods is cool.
Thief of Time, too.

I like all the Witches Books, and Death is one of my favorite characters.
The all-wizard books I am not soo fond of.

I think The Color of Magic was the first book, IIRC, and I didn't care for it much either.  Never read Pyramids, but I enjoyed Small Gods too.

I like the books that involve Death and his granddaughter Susan with Hogfather and Thief of Time tying for my favorite.  I'm also very fond of the books that center around the Discworld witches with The Tiffany Aching series (Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, and Wintersmith) coming in as my #1 choice.

I have these lying around here, waiting to be read. :)
Tho' I find the wee-free men accent terrible hard to read. :(

It is tough, yeah.  I actually tried listening to them on my iPod as audiobooks and liked it better.  I don't know if that's an option for you, but I thought the English narrator did a really nice job with the Nac Mac Feegle accents.  :)

I am going to say that Hogfather is my favorite but it is more fun to read around the  Holiday Season (since it satirizes various Christmas tropes)...or at least it is to me since I want to make it a personal tradition to re-read it every year around that time.

Other than that, the entire Death sub-series (which Hogfather is apart of) is my favorite.  Yeah, I know.  Surprise, surprise.

Any where the Witches, Death or Susan take centre stage. Off the top of my head, I'd pick Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Soul Music and Hogfather.

Thank gods that I've handed you back the brain or I'd have quite the mental picture to cope with.  :D

*panicked look* I have to choose?!?!?

Let me think if I can list them by title. *crosses eyes in concentration* In no particular order:
Small Gods
Hogfather
Thief of Time
The Wee Free Men
A Hat Full of Sky
I Shall Wear Midnight (the latest Tiffany Aching)
Monstrous Regiment
Nightwatch
Guards! Guards!
Soul Music
Maskerade
Mort
The Last Continent
Going Postal
Making Money

.....*blinks* I know I've forgotten some. (I have practically all of them, so......) :o

Gosh.

I think it has to be Night Watch. The Watch series are my favorites. Mainly because of Sam Vimes.

But then, I'm a fan of pretty much all of the books! :p I love the witches, and Granny, wherever they appear, but especially in Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad. I also really like the Tiffany Aching series because the Nac Mac Feegles are one of the most hilarious group of characters I've ever encountered.

I also love Death, wherever he and Susan appear, but particularly in Soul Music and Thief of Time (which has the bonus of including Lu Tze. I also actually really like it when the wizards appear, The Last Continent in particular. I think it's because Ridcully cracks me up.

But Vimes is my number one favorite character, and Granny my number two. So the guards series and the witches' series are probably my favorites, and Death/Susan's series very, very close after.

My favorite one-offs are Small Gods and Moving Pictures.
