Symbolic Meaning of this Pendant?
« on: June 01, 2012, 07:57:27 am »
Hello everyone,

A friend of mine wears this pendant around her neck and she has recently begun to wonder if it had symbolic or religious meaning.

I know snakes have varied symbolism but I, personally, have not come across this symbol.

Any leads would be appreciated!

I've seen some old Irish symbols with serpents twisted together however The one I recall had both snake heads on the same side.

Maybe just ask her? Say something like That's a really interesting pendant, does it have a special meaning?
~<>~ Flame of light, flame of dark, working together, never apart.
Dancing in harmony, balance assured, dark absorbs so light may endure.

Honestly, it looks like just being decorative.
Maybe inspired by the symbol on the book in the Neverending Story. ;)
\'You had to repay, good or bad. There was more than one type of obligation.
That’s what people never really understood.….Things had to balance.
You couldn’t set out to be a good witch or a bad witch. It never worked out for long.
All you could try to be was a witch, as hard as you could.\'

For those for whom it's not an 'of course', a clarifying link.

Naturally, a symbol made of two entwined snakes has plenty of religious and symbolic meaning--to the point where it's hard to pin it down to one tradition.

I'd say she's in a good place to consider it a religious symbol for any number of things, or just a cool sculpture of a couple of snakes.

I highly recommend Penguin's Dictionairy of Symbols as a wonderful reference book for any symbol you might come across. Serpents have been used as symbols in a wide variety of settings, across many religions and cultures. The entry for serpents in DoS is too long for me to fully read and relate to you now, so I offer a more personal interpretation: the pendant reminds me of Ouroboros (even though this serpent has two heads and is not biting it's own tail) and of infinity symbols, because of it's shape reminding me of a horizontal eight. It seems to be a modern design, influenced perhaps by these ideas. Again: personal intepretation here, for more historically accurate leads, check DoS.
