The Spoon Theory by Christine Miserandino

I thought with a new board it might be handy to have a spot to direct newbies to/discuss the wonderful analogy that is the spoon theory. (Actually, I was originally going to add it to the link directory, until I realized it was just for member blogs. So here's as good as anything!)

It's brilliant. I was introduced to it by a friend of my mum's, who lives with fibromyalgia. Running out of spoons is no fun at all.

Genius! I don't have lupus but I do have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and when my levels are off everything goes haywire. If I work 8 hours I *have* to sleep right after work. I just do. Which of course screws up the rest of my day / evening. It's hard to get people to understand that I'm not lazy etc that I don't intend to forget crap or be so scatterbrained, rather it's my body being weird and leading to that. Oh bless you spoons :D

The spoon theory works for pretty much most 'non visible' illnesses. It describes my MS to a tee......

This. With the school schedule I have this term, I'm pretty sure that I've over-reached my spoons..... Here's hoping that I can survive it!

The perfect analogy.

And even to situations in which people who ordinarily don't have to think about such things find that they do - no one has enough spoons when they have the 'flu, f'ex; and no one's spoons are infinite so even people who have lots can try to do too much and use them up.

And grief (among other things) can make spoon-counting weird - I'm used to having to keep an eye on my spoons (depression, mainly), but right now it's... I don't have fewer spoons, but I have fewer general-purpose ones; most of them seem to be specialized.

(As someone who likely has ADHD, I also have to count forks... focus/forkus - the pun is bad, it's just there as a way to choose what kind of non-spoon flatware to refer to; the extension of the system is useful for me, though.)

It's completely nifty, to me, that what began as an illustration using what was handy turned out to be such an effective, versatile, expandable, and easily-explained analogy.

I read it and it is the story of my life. I'm thinking about sending it to a friend of mine who I don't think quite understands my migraines and how debilitating they can be, but I think this can explain how it shuts me down.
