Children's Books
« on: March 21, 2012, 12:31:59 am »
Hey guys so I am looking for some good children's books that introduce children to the Gods.

So far I have the "cry of the Benu Bird" - It's being shipped now but I heard its a lovely book to introduce the Heliopolitan creation myth.

Growing up in Ancient Egypt - This is a great book, lovely illustrations and pretty accurate information.

In the Daily Life of the Ancient Egyptians - I really loved this book but the description of Set is very demeaning, it calls him the God of evil

I was wondering if anyone has any other books they would suggest?

That's a fantastic idea! I write books for my kids, so this kind of thing will be next on my list. I'm tempted by Demeter and Persephone's story but I think I'd have to cheer it up a bit for my 3 year old daughter with separation anxiety. Hmm .. lol

I haven't found a book for children on Greek mythology that portrays the Gods as happy and functional lol.

Another great book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0064434249/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

The Winged Cat :)

They're teen/young adult books and will probably kill a Recon dead when reading them but no books have ever given me such a feel for the Gods than the books by Rick Riordan.

While his Olympian Demigod Series (Greek mythology) are the most famous, I prefer the Kane Chronicles (Egyptian mythology). His books so far in both series:

Olympian Demigod Series
Series One: Percy Jackson and the Olympians:
The Lightning Thief (2005)
The Sea of Monsters (2006)
The Titan's Curse (2007)
The Battle of the Labyrinth (2008)
The Last Olympian (2009)

Series Two: The Heroes of Olympus:
The Lost Hero (2010)
The Son of Neptune (2011)

The Kane Chronicles:
The Red Pyramid (2010)
The Throne of Fire (2011)
The Serpent's Shadow (2012)

The children's book 'The Kin' (1998) by Peter Dickinson

The Kin revolves around one of the (fictional) first tribes of humans and follows the adventures of four children, trying to survive after they loose their tribe. It's not pagan per se, but it helped greatly in getting the right mindset for Paganism. The book is called (translated back to English, of course) 'Children of the Moonfalcon' in Dutch and that has a much better ring to it, IMHO ;)

Quoting myself from another thread. The young adult books are probably best for ages 10 and up but the Kin is good for ages 4 and up, I guess. It doesn't deal with actual Gods but it's a good introduction to the worship of Gods.
Where I ramble on: Baring the Aegis
Where I try to be coherent: Little Witch magazine

It's not Kemetic, but have you thought about The Egypt Game? It's an early chapter book about a group of children who more-or-less become Egyptian "reconstructionists" in a vacant city lot, create a temple, hold rituals and so forth. If I recall correct, there is an ethnic slur used at the end of the book ("gypsy") and there is a mystery plot involving a local murderer, so you might want to preview it. It's a Newberry Award Winner, so your local library probably has a copy.
