Quote
A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light with the discovery of 500 new fairytales, which were locked away in an archive in Regensburg, Germany for over 150 years. The tales are part of a collection of myths, legends and fairytales, gathered by the local historian Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1810–1886) in the Bavarian region of Oberpfalz at about the same time as the Grimm brothers were collecting the fairytales that have since charmed adults and children around the world.

This is so cool!

This is going to be such an amazing addition to our knowledge and imaginations.

Heck, if the major portion of it is printed in German, I'll get it and learn!

(needed an excuse anyway :) )

Preferably an uncensored English translation, gore and sexual content intact. (Adaptations for children can be done later.)

Agreed. Make them "safe for the children" later.

Most likely the versions they found have been already sanitized by the collector - not Disney-style, but still not as the original tellings tend to be. The Grimms did that, too.

I tried to track that news down this morning, but didn't find anything.
Gotta google-fu a bit harder, I guess. Should I get my hands on anything worthwhile, I'll let you know.

Hmm, there is something on amazon.de, but I am not sure, if this is really the right book. Will keep an eye on it.

(P.S. saw that they say, Schönwerth didn't do the Grimm-expurgation, now that makes it twice as interesting.)

Now I have the right one!

http://www.amazon.de/M%C3%A4rchen-Oberpfalz-Herausgegeben-Eichenseer-Sch%C3%B6nwerth-Gesellschaft/dp/3936721351

But this is only a rather thin booklet.
They haven't brought out the whole of the collection. (yet?)

So aside from initial enthusiasm for how awesome this is, I reeeaaaaaallly hope that they are well translated and not changed or censored in any way... That would be awful - yet more fodder for Disney's cannon.

Ich muss die Märchen lesen! (Unfortunately, that's about the extent of my German.) Catja is going to go nuts.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Obviously that edition I found can't really hold too many fairy tales.
I will get it at occasion, it is only five Euro, and will give input about the tales here.
(If time allows, I might can even manage to translate some.)
