Just wondering how people are planning to celebrate Imbolc......and looking for ideas to "borrow".  :ange:

For the first time, my family is inviting a couple of friends to join us on the Saturday before Imbolc.  We'll bake soda bread and short-bread cookies, make crosses and brats, and then have a nice dinner of poundies and omelettes.  If anyone wants me to, I'll talk about the Irish traditions and their connections to Brighid.

Privately, I'll put my brats out and also observe the "holiday from turning" from sundown on January 31 to sundown on February 1 and try to do some reading and meditating.

What are you doing (if you celebrate Imbolc)?

~ Aster

Last year I did a purification rite that used a bucket of water to represent Brighid's healing well, and I washed with that blessed water. I am thinking that maybe i can use a similiar symbolism for turning the ritual for ask Her blessing and  Inspiration on my work. I usually also prepare a Brighid 's bed and pour a glass of beer for Her...

Whoa! I can't believe Imbolc's nearly here! Gotta prepare...

I'm going to do the annual spring cleaning as best I can (it's a little different this year, house sitting), change up the altar trappings, and meditate. It'll probably be a quiet Imbolc this year, actually.

I've had an idea to share since around the time of the Lady of the Stars thread happened, but have never had a decent place to hang it.  So thank you.  I've not done it, so I don't have any commentary other than: This is my idea.

A Bed of Coals.
Suitable for most divinities associated with fire/coals, but I think it fits Brigid best.  Used as emblematic of the womb of fire.  Healing, meditation, visioning.  As with all things, take precautions when undergoing heat.

Materials:
*Lots and lots of throw pillows.  Ideally in colors reminiscent of coals.  Black, grey, orange, red, ash white.
*At least one electric blanket.
Optional: Two more blankets/sheets

Process:
Lay the first electric blanket down where the bed will be and turn it on.
Pile on the pillows, wait for them to warm up.
Snuggle/bury yourself in the now warm coals.
Option: Use one of the blankets as a cocoon around yourself inside the coals (so you don't get sweat all over the pillows), the other (possibly electric) on top of the coals to keep the heat in.
There is no inherent meaning to life.  Stop looking and give your life meaning.

I think of Imbolc as a season, but my primary celebration is from sunset on January 31 to sunset on February 2. That's mostly because I like being in sync with others who are celebrating around the same time.

Just curious:  Why do you celebrate on February 12?

Possibly using the Julian Calendar like I do for this ritual date?  However I will be celebrating on the 15th.

Good question, I've heard of a few celebrating it on the 4th which I think had something to do with that archaeoastronomy earth clock? http://www.archaeoastronomy.com/

Personally thinking of Imbolg astrologically doesn't work for me, as it's more seasonal. I could even understand an earlier date in January than later in February, but whatever works. Traditionally the festival would have been a few days long, based more around the lunar cycle and the birth of lambs, which have already been running around Ireland's fields....

Well on that note,  Imbolg blessings to those with festivities to come!

The Coven I used to belong to used the Old Calendar for Imbolc and I've just kept on with it.

Julian calendar I expect. There are a few places in Wales that still celebrate "Old Christmas Day" I'm told.
