Just wondering if the techno-bookophiles on the Cauldron have a favourite e reader. Which is better Kobo or Kindle or??? and why?

I have a Simple Touch Nook, and I love it. It has e-ink which is as easy on my eyes as a normal paper book, and it's very easy to use. The battery life is good, and even in a case it's very lightweight. I will never do away with paper books, but it's a nice option to have.

The newest kindle edition, sans large size/bells and whistles, is cheap. 79 bucks!

The only downside to my kindle thus far has been study books. I think it's just easier to buy physical manuals/study books and mark them with ribbon for easy access. Since you can bookmark pages on Kindles, I can't really give a good reason to why I feel this way.

All the e-book readers seem really great. The thing they compare models buy proves that. "Kindle turns pages at the speed of .00005 seconds!" "Oh yeah, well Nook turns the page at .0000009 seconds!" That's an exaggeration, of course.

One of my husband's co-workers also says that her Nook can easily rent books from the library. I don't think you can do this on the Kindle?

I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you get. e-book readers are good on the eyes, and I don't have to get into awkward positions to read one for long periods.

You can now (at least with the new generation Kindles).  We just added them to our Overdrive collection at work.  I say this with qualifications:  there was a huge snafu with new Penguin Group titles being (blessedly briefly) pulled from circulation last week.  Seems to have worked itself out, but I wonder about other publishers having similar problems with Amazon in the future.

I have a Nook because it uses the standard (and open) .epub format instead of the Amazon-only .mobi format the Kindle uses.

Get a smartphone (or an ipod touch) and download the  apps for both. That's what I did.

Pretty much what I'd recommend.

If your local library uses overdrive then you should have access to library books. If you have an amazon Prime account then you can also borrow one book a month from the Kindle Lending library.

Also Project Gutenberg and other online libraries have loads of out of copyright (usually) books for free, a lot of indie authors also provide samples and sometimes full novels for free on the kindle store, presumably the nook store is similar but I can't speak for it.

I work for my local library and do a little front-end Overdrive support.  Sorry I didn't make that clear.  ;)

I thought it also impacted the lending library titles (the ones available through Amazon Prime).

I don't  know if this will help, but it's a comparison of  4 e reader's, I found it on the Kobo site...it's  for the touch reader's...
